Matthew Corey in 2018 CT Senate race

On Budget & Economy: Washington's unbalanced budget affects all states

The $20 trillion in debt that we face is stifling job growth. The failure in Washington to pass a balanced budget is hindering our ability to grow the economy. With the right tax policy we can bring technology companies to invest in this country & state. We have to create a pathway for the next generation to bring new innovation to help America be the leader in the 21st Century. The harmful regulations that cost businesses millions of dollars that could be used for job growth and research.

On Budget & Economy: Wasteful spending and regulations crippling jobs

We need to decrease federal spending on wasteful projects and increase private sector investment through tax reform. Federal mandates and burdensome regulations are destroying job growth. We need a sound energy policy so companies can compete in a global economy. We need to invest in the next generation who will have the answers to lead this nation in becoming a clean energy country. We need corporate tax reform to bring back the trillions of dollars overseas. We need to stop crony capitalism.

On Education: Wants vouchers for school choice, empower states

Give parents the choice to enroll their children in the public schools, charter schools, or private schools they feel could help their child's future. Provide a tax credit for families who home school their children. Eliminate the Federal Department of Education and return power to the states and local government. Send block grants back to the states. Let teachers and parents have more input in the education process of their children. The civil rights battle of today is in the cities.

On Health Care: Let health care be governed by the free market

Health care cost is on the rise. We should allow the purchase of health insurance across state lines. We also need tort reform. There should be no discrimination on purchasing health care with preexisting conditions which the states should subsidize through cost effective Medicaid programs. The exchanges are in place. Let the free market compete in these exchanges so the American people can get the best rates. We also need to create large pools so individuals can get the best rates available.

On Homeland Security: Veterans cannot be ignored or forgotten

We owe our freedoms to those who serve. They must never be forgotten. The backlog of disability claims must be addressed immediately. We cannot send our men and women into harm's way and forget them when they return. I propose we eliminate every veterans hospital that is failing our veterans and put them into the hospitals that work for everyone. The VA must be held accountable for failing to serve our veterans with the dignity they deserve.

On Social Security: Social Security isn't an entitlement but a benefit

We have 59 million Americans receiving benefits from Social Security. This benefit is not an entitlement. The people, who are not entitled to it, are the politicians who borrow from it. We need to get the 94 million people that are out of work back to work who are not yet of retirement age. We also need to raise the contribution cap. We need to give social security to those who need it most. We need tax free retirement savings accounts. We also need to look at increasing the retirement age.

On War & Peace: ISIS must be eliminated at all costs

Defense is vital to our nation's security and our state's economy. We can't afford to lose Federal contracts. Connecticut's economy depends on preserving the defense contracts. ISIS must be destroyed where ever it festers. We need strong leadership in Washington with a clear mission to destroy this evil. If we elect to do nothing we will witness evil and genocide continue to destroy human life. Radical Islam will influence the youth in the region taking generations to eradicate.

On Families & Children: Investigate Hollywood's systematic sexual abuse

Republican Matt Corey is calling for a congressional hearing on the growing scandal of sexual abuse and assault in Hollywood. "After weeks of explosive headlines, and dozens of victims coming forward to detail serial sexual abuse at the hands of [Hollywood Producer] Harvey Weinstein, today I am calling on the U.S. Senate to immediately begin an investigation into the systematic sexual abuse of young women and the ensuing cover up by all responsible in this billion dollar industry," said Corey.

Corey, who is a member of the Screen Actors Guild, said of both [his Democratic opponent Sen. Chris] Murphy and Sen. Richard Blumenthal, "I am extremely disappointed that our two U.S. Senators from Connecticut have been silent on this issue."

Corey sent a letter to Sens. Mitch McConnell & Charles Schumer asking for a hearing on the Weinstein allegations--"and the widespread complicity of insiders and leaders in this billion-dollar industry in condoning the abusive and criminal behavior."

On Tax Reform: Wants lower corporate and middle class tax rates

Asked about his priorities Corey cited tax reform and regulatory reform. "The President wants to bring down the corporate tax rate, he wants to have a basic tax reform for the middle class." He criticized the Connecticut congressional delegation for "spew[ing] the same talking points" on tax reform, suggesting he supports a cut in the corporate tax rate. Corey also talked about cutting regulations - boosting American energy, and relaxing Dodd-Frank rules for small community banks.

On Gun Control: Gun control needs more mental health programs

On the heels of Sen. Murphy's call for Congress to take action on gun control following the mass shooting in Las Vegas. Corey attacked his actions and statements. Corey insists now is the time for healing, not political rhetoric. "What law is Senator Murphy going to put in place to keep the guns out of criminals hands? So what he's doing is a knee jerk reaction to take away the rights of abiding citizens. Corey believes part of the solution to mass shootings is to focus on mental healthcare.

On Corporations: Government regulations stifling small businesses

He says his bar business has dropped by 2/3's as numerous corporations have moved workers out of downtown Hartford. The bar has been the scene of many celebrations, but sometimes the workers arrive to commiserate with their corporate colleagues. "We've had layoff parties here," Corey said during an interview at McKinnon's. "I've seen a lot of that happen." Corey said he was driven to action partly to fight the regulations that he says are stifling his 2 small businesses.

In a debate with U.S. Rep John larson; Concerning foreign policy, Larson said the United States needs to avoid "the tragic mistake in Iraq'' in any future conflicts and must avoid being "the police force'' of the world. But Corey, a U.S. Navy veteran, had a different view. "Whether you believe there [were] weapons of mass destruction in Iraq or not, it was a war worth going into,'' Corey said.

On Drugs: Attack drug companies & prescribing doctors first

Corey said, "It's one thing to disagree with the president on his policy but what helping hand are you lending to solve problems in this country?" Corey cited Murphy's response to the opioid epidemic in the state as an example. "I tip my hat that he's at least raised the issue but what are his ideas?'' Corey asked. "Is he going after big pharmaceutical companies? Is he going after the doctors who are prescribing these drugs? What is he doing to address this problem?"
