Andrew Gillum: Religious-political dialogue good

Gillum hosted his quarterly Faith Leaders Luncheon. It provides an opportunity for the faith community to engage with elected officials. "The more that we can bring the houses of worship and the faith community into the same space, I think it's better," said Gillum. "It informs them about what's happening in parts of our city and gives the community leaders a direct connection to the community."

Andrew Gillum: Served a decade on City Commission and as Tallahassee mayor

Gillum will serve out his term as mayor but not seek re-election to the post. Gillum was elected mayor in 2014 after serving more than a decade on the City Commission. Gillum's announcement ends months of speculation about his political plans. It also makes him the first major candidate to declare he's running for governor in 2018. And it sets the stage for a potential Democratic primary showdown with former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham of Tallahassee, who's all but announced she's running.

The move also would open up the mayor's seat in 2018, which could prompt many mayoral hopefuls to run for the post.

Gillum said during his announcement call that he had a "clear and authentic voice" and an agenda that would appeal to voters. "It's important to get out there and tell our story," he said. "I am jazzed up. It might be naivete about what's around the bend."
