2018 FactCheck: on Tax Reform

Josh Hawley: Ad-Watch: tax plan gives 25%, not 83%, to richest 1%

Claire McCaskill ad claim: Hawley supported the tax plan giving 83 percent of tax benefits to the richest 1 percent of Americans

We found this to be incomplete. A Tax Policy Center analysis shows about 25 percent of tax cuts will go to the top 1 percent in 2025. The amount of tax cuts going to the richest Americans does jump to 83 percent in 2027, but only because most individual income tax changes expire then.

Hawley's team called the attack false in a press release saying, "It's a classic case of politicians using a technically accurate statistic but without the context or explanation it requires."

Richard Cordray: Does not back tax bill; not enough benefit to middle class

Richard Cordray, a Democrat running for governor in Ohio described the tax bill as a "terrible deal" that helps the wealthy. In a speech Cordray told the audience about his efforts to help consumers and fight big banks while serving as the first director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. When an audience member asked Cordray to weigh in on the federal tax bill that was in the works at the time (it later became law), he said it wouldn't do enough to help the middle class.

Guy Reschenthaler: Voted yes to cut taxes for top 1%

[Opponent Jess] King released a commercial of her own called "Working for Us": "Representative Smucker passed a huge tax giveaway for big corporations". While he didn't pass it himself, Smucker did vote 'yea' on 2017's Republican Tax Overhaul bill which would give the country's top 1% tens of thousands of dollars in tax cuts, according to the Tax Policy Center. CBS 21 reached out to Smucker regarding these ads and did not hear back.
