On Principles & Values: Protect student athletes' religious expression

I was proud to have supported Senate Bill 309, which simply states that high schools receiving state funding cannot participate in an athletic association that prohibits religious expression on students' clothing. This legislation ensures that our student athletes are protected from discrimination on religious grounds. I'm proud of the work we've done to protect Georgia's student athletes.

On Civil Rights: Confederate monuments are a great cultural attraction

On Confederate monuments: Take a trip to Stone Mountain today and you'll see a diverse group of Georgians enjoying a great cultural attraction. The state has taken great strides to offer exhibits and presentations that give a fuller and more inclusive view of our state's rich history. Instead of dividing Georgians with inflammatory rhetoric for political gain, we should work together to add to our history, not take from it.

On Abortion: Every child is a gift from God; 100% pro-life

No task of government is more important than protecting innocent life. From his first election through the present, Casey Cagle has never wavered in his dedication to stopping threats against the most vulnerable members of our society.

Lt. Governor Cagle is 100% pro-life, and deeply believes that every child is a gift from God who deserves the full protection of our laws, from conception forward. He has acted on this commitment by helping pass numerous pieces of pro-life legislation.

Casey Cagle also believes we must protect all members of our society with strong law enforcement, tough criminal laws and a specific focus on preventing our senior citizens from being victims of fraud.

On Budget & Economy: Expect state government to balance budget & reduce waste

Georgia's Constitution requires a balanced budget, and our citizens should be proud that we have weathered the recent economic downturn without raising taxes. This has taken some belt tightening on the part of government. However, if Georgia families can balance their checkbooks, then we should expect our state government to do the same.

Lt. Gov. Cagle has led the way by creating new avenues for citizens to report government waste, and fighting to eliminate unneeded programs from the state budget. This hard work has resulted in Georgia government running leaner than ever, and is why our state is one of only a handful that enjoys a top credit rating.

We must remain vigilant in the fight against government waste. As our economy improves, there will be those who want to create new programs without careful thought. The better choice is to be wise, prudent and careful with taxpayer funds, ensuring our state rebuilds its rainy day fund and continues to reduce the tax burden on our citizens.

On Corporations: Keep taxes on business that create jobs low

Government cannot create jobs, but it can help create the kind of environment that jobs need to flourish. First and foremost, this means keeping taxes on business that create jobs low and ensuring that we do not overburden our business environment with counterproductive regulations that have been such a problem in other, more liberal states.

Since his election, Lt. Governor Cagle has worked ceaselessly to create this kind of environment in Georgia, helping to recruit several major employers to our state. Additionally, his dedication to helping small businesses grow continues to offer hope and options to the job creators of tomorrow in Georgia.

In addition to keeping taxes and regulation under control, we must also provide the basic infrastructure that employers need in order to come to Georgia. This includes a strong education system, good roads, and investing in deepening the Savannah harbor so that large cargo vessels can reach our factories and consumers.

On Education: Options for public charter, private school or home schooling

Georgia's children are our state's future, and it is critical that we invest wisely in helping them have brighter futures here. As a child who grew up with a single mother who worked two jobs to provide a better chance for her kids, Cagle understands the difference a good public school education can make. And he believes in the importance of giving every parent and child a chance to use the option that is best for them, whether that is public school, private school or home schooling.

Since his election, Cagle has passed landmark legislation to create charter systems that allow entire school systems to bypass counterproductive regulations in return for meeting and keeping a commitment to excellence. Additionally, he has worked successfully to create College and Career Academies across Georgia so that kids who want to learn a skilled trade or get a professional certification in high school can have a chance to start earning a good living when they graduate.

On Gun Control: Expand citizens' ability to protect themselves & families

Our right to keep and bear arms is enshrined in both the federal and state Constitutions, and it is a bedrock of the liberty we enjoy as Americans. Since Lt. Governor Cagle's election, the Republican majority has comprehensively re-written Georgia's firearms laws to expand the ability of law abiding citizens to protect themselves and their families. Additionally, his continued support of access to outdoor recreation opportunities has helped ensured future generations of Georgians will enjoy hunting, shooting, fishing and other outdoor activities their parents and grandparents cherish. He has also been a vocal supporter of relocating gun manufacturers to Georgia and away from liberal states, creating jobs for our citizens here.

Our state will continue to be eyed carefully by liberal national groups who want to limit our ability to exercise our freedoms. For this reason, we must never stop being vigilant against attempts to restrict our liberties.

On Tax Reform: Businesses and families flourish when tax burden is low

Businesses and families flourish when government provides only what our citizens truly need, keeping our tax burden low. Georgia ranks as one of the lowest taxing states in the country, but we must continue to fight to keep taxes low.

In recent years, the State Senate, under Casey Cagle's leadership, has passed groundbreaking legislation to lower our overall tax burden, eliminate the marriage penalty, and scrap the death tax. At the local level, numerous steps have been taken to require local governments to fairly assess property so that homeowners are not treated unfairly.

However, there is more work to be done. Lt. Governor Cagle has pledged to continue the fight for fairer, simpler taxes, and will fight for broad reform of Georgia's tax laws in the future.

On Technology: Invest in good roads and a deepened harbor

We must provide the basic infrastructure that employers need in order to come to Georgia. This includes a strong education system, good roads, and investing in deepening the Savannah harbor so that large cargo vessels can reach our factories and consumers. We must always remember to keep our economic development policies balanced, so they support every sector of our economy, from family farms in rural Georgia to small businesses across our state and corporate employers in major cities.

On Education: Declare war on high school dropout rates in Georgia

Cagle promised to "declare war on high school dropout rates in Georgia." Cagle wants to vastly expand the network of about 40 college and career academies around the state, with the goal of driving down the high school dropout rate. And he said he'll pour more state resources into boosting third-grade reading proficiency. He wrote a book about education policy that published last year.

On Jobs: Create 500,000 jobs in first term, to beat Deal's 319,000

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle launched his campaign for governor with a pledge to add 500,000 jobs in his first four years in office, slash $100 million in taxes in his opening months and a promise to "declare war on high school dropout rates in Georgia."

Cagle said he would quickly appoint an economic development liaison to work with businesses to streamline permitting, and he said he'd hit the road to recruit companies around the nation and the globe with an emphasis on targeting high-tech firms. "We've been successful in being the Hollywood of the South," he said, "but now we will be the Silicon Valley of the South."

His 500,000 job creation goal is lofty: Deal put economic development at the center of his campaign, and he said he created more than 319,000 private-sector jobs in his first term.

On Tax Reform: Slash $100 million in taxes, without cutting core services

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle launched his campaign for governor with a pledge to slash $100 million in taxes in his opening months. He would pursue his tax cut in his first legislative session as governor by increasing the amount that Georgians can deduct from their income tax returns. His proposal would call for the first $12,000 of taxable income for a family of four to be tax-exempt and an increase in standard deductions as well.

On cutting taxes without cutting core services, Cagle said, "I will be a governor that will make certain that government is more efficient and effective and responsible to the citizens. We will save more money for the state, and we'll be able to return more to the taxpayers and make the strategic investments."

On Technology: 10-year transportation plan for roads & bridges improvements

Casting the I-85 bridge collapse as a "wakeup call," Cagle said he'd order a new 10-year transportation plan that would rank which roads and bridges most need improvements and identify new corridors to build. He expressed support for more reversible lanes, tunnels and even elevated routes. "We have to be willing to go up and go under if that is what is going to be required," said Cagle. "There is nothing that is off the table. It is that important. We cannot afford to be unproductive as a state because we are constantly sitting in congestion."

"First we have to determine where the needs are and what the consumers are willing to pay, and we have to be willing to put the needed resources behind the build-out. State funding is certainly not off the table."

On Education: Education savings accounts including private schools

Republican Hunter Hill entered the race for Georgia governor, emphasizing his background as a U.S. Army veteran who pledges to bring a "more efficient and effective state government" and a vow to advocate for school vouchers.

Hill was first elected to a Senate seat in 2012 that represents parts of north Atlanta and east Cobb and is perhaps best known as an advocate for education savings accounts and other programs that let state school funding follow students to private schools. He said that effort will be a centerpiece of his campaign. "The overarching goal is an education system where every child has an opportunity to succeed, and expanding choice plays a large role in that," said Hill, adding: "Everything is on the table as it relates to reform." Hill said he would "spend less on low-return activities" and reinvest those public dollars in K-12 education, transportation and public safety.

On Technology: Double--if not triple--our investment in transportation

Hill said he would "spend less on low-return activities" and reinvest those public dollars in K-12 education, transportation and public safety. He offered few specifics on potential cuts, though he said "we're going to look at every dollar that's spent and we're going to measure results." As a senator with a MARTA line running through his district, Hill also indicated he would support state funding for transit as part of a broader transportation plan. "What I can tell you is that we're going to deliver results. Transit is going to be a part of that," he said. "We've got to double if not triple our investment in transportation, and that's going to be our goal."
