On Civil Rights: Common sense view of gender: there are two sexes

There are two sexes: female and male. Most education issues are best decided at the local level--not by far away bureaucrats who think they know best. That is why I opposed President Obama's top-down directive for a single bathroom policy that was divisive and destructive for our schools and our kids. I'll oppose any attempt by the federal government or any interest group to intimidate communities who hold a common sense view of gender, and we'll defend the freedom of our local schools.

On Environment: Cost-benefit analysis of agricultural regulations

We have to defend and protect our state's Right-to-Farm law, which provides key protections for our farmers to continue doing what they've always done: produce.

Our government shouldn't be in the business of picking winners and losers. Unfortunately, regulations and the cost of those regulations often mean we are putting producers at a disadvantage to serve some other group.

We should make the cost-benefit analysis of regulations more transparent and reflective of who bears most of the impact. When we find--which we will in most cases--that the producer bears a disproportionate share of the impact we have a responsibility to look for alternatives or find new, creative ways to reduce the impact.

It's why I believe it is critical for us to put more agricultural experience into our state regulatory agencies, and to ensure that these agencies have a complete picture of the agriculture supply chain before taking action.

On Families & Children: My faith informs my view of marriage

Marriage is between a man and a woman. My faith informs my view of marriage. And as a conservative, I know that outside of the democratic process the Supreme Court imposed a new interpretation of the Constitution that was contrary to all historical evidence and understanding of the institution of marriage.

On Principles & Values: Don't exclude faith from public life

Religious liberty is non-negotiable. One of the most fundamental Constitutional rights is the right to exercise your faith freely. Too many times, the phrase, "separation of church and state" has been twisted to mean "keep faith out of public life" or, "leaders should check their values at the door when making decisions about right and wrong." That understanding is a mistake, and as governor, I will work to defend the freedom of every Tennessean to live his or her values.
