Gubernatorial campaign websites: on Drugs

Molly Kelly: Help opioid users recover & rebuild

The devastating opioid epidemic is the biggest challenge our state faces. We need to help people suffering from substance misuse disorders to recover and rebuild their lives today; support the first responders on the front lines of the epidemic, and do more to help people avoid this illness in the first place.

Christine Hallquist: Treat opiate crisis as a public health issue

Work with local community health organizations, the Attorney General and State's Attorney's offices, local law enforcement, and ensure that opiate crisis is always treated as a public health issue. Recognize that prevention and proactive treatment is not only fiscally responsible, but the moral imperative. Put existing research into action and investigate whether safe-injection sites could be made available in Vermont. Focus on social justice and harm reduction.

Bill Schuette: The opioid epidemic cannot be solved with just arresting

Michigan is gripped by an epidemic of opioid addictions that must be fought on all fronts. Bill works daily to slow the availability of opioids and heroin with a special criminal unit that targets the distribution of these drugs. However, we cannot arrest our way out of this problem, so Bill has supported legislation to limit prescriptions and the recent increased federal funding to create education and treatment programs at the state level that have been lacking.

Lori Swanson: Joined with other AG's to investigate opioid manufacturers

Over 30K people will die from opioid-related overdoses this year in the U.S.A.

The USA has less than 5% of the world's population but uses 80% of the world's prescription opioid painkillers. People who abuse prescription painkillers often turn to street heroin because of its lower cost. I have joined with a number of other AG's in an investigation into the potential legal culpability of pharmaceutical manufacturers in the marketing and sale of opioid prescription painkillers.

Marc Molinaro: Look into why people become addicted and help them

Marc believes strongly that as a society we need to break through the stigma and address the struggles of those who are addicted to heroin, opioids, and other drugs with the dignity they deserve.

Walt Maddox: Substance abuse should have its own cabinet-level officer

Alabama has been hit hard with opioid abuse and addiction. Our state has the highest rate of prescription opioid use in the nation, and it's well established that legitimate use of opioid medication is a leading cause of opioid abuse. One of my first steps to fight this crisis will be to separate substance abuse out from under the Dept of Mental Health. We need a cabinet level officer who answers directly to the Governor while continuing to coordinate drug policy with mental health resources.

Ben Jealous: Recognizes the suffering caused from the opioid epidemic

Our state is in crisis. Communities across Maryland, from Baltimore to Oakland to Ocean City, La Plata, Elkton, Rockville, and everywhere in between are suffering from the scourge of addiction to heroin and other opioids.

Abdul El-Sayed: End marijuana prohibition; tax it and regulate it

I support the 2018 ballot initiative to end marijuana prohibition in Michigan and establish a system in which marijuana is regulated and taxed similarly to alcohol. Additionally, I support efforts to ensure that Michigan's adult-use cannabis industry is oriented to small businesses and accessible to people of color and other communities disproportionately affected by the misguided and failed War on Drugs. That is why as governor, I will:

Karl Dean: Provide treatment for opioids while stepping up prosecution

The number of opioid-related deaths in Tennessee has skyrocketed over the last two decades. More people are now dying in Tennessee of drug overdose than motor vehicle accidents, and 72% of the state's overdose deaths are opioid-related. Karl believes the government response to opioid use should match the level of public health crisis it has become. To that end, he supports the recent work of the state legislature's opioid task force.

Karl knows that opioid addiction is a complex issue and that more must be done to provide treatment programs while also stepping up prosecution of drug dealers. He also agrees with the state's opioid task force that solutions must address the overuse of legal access to drugs. Tennessee has the second highest rate of opioid prescriptions in the country with opioid prescriptions in our state outnumbering residents 4 to 1. As governor, Karl will work in partnership with the healthcare community to identify and address the root causes of the state's opioid crisis.

Tommy Ahlquist: More law enforcement & clinical resources for opioid crisis

Ahlquist today announced his action plan to address Idaho's ongoing opioid crisis. The goal will be to reduce the number of opioid deaths in Idaho by 50% in 4 years. Tommy Ahlquist, M.D., says, "Whether from prescription opioids or illegal heroin--the death of even one Idahoan in the opioid epidemic is one too many."
To reduce the number of opioid deaths:
  1. Join six other states in declaring a state of emergency
  2. Raise public awareness and assemble a broad group of leaders to help fight this crisis including state and local law enforcement, medical professionals, community leaders and churches
  3. Ensure law enforcement agencies and first responders have the training and equipment necessary to fight this crisis
  4. Evaluate and consider smart investments in substance abuse clinics that can help address this crisis
  5. Improve life-saving naloxone (opioid reversal drug) dissemination, and access to medical assisted treatment programs, and non-opioid chronic pain therapies in Idaho

Doug Robinson: Do better by preventing addiction & promoting natural high

Our current leaders seem to focus on whether or not drug usage is increasing. The fact is that the level of youth use is unacceptably high. We can do better for our young people and all Coloradans by:

Doug Robinson: Children need to be protected from the dangers of pot

With the passage of Amendment 64 in 2012, Diane and other "moms" asked the question--who is looking out for our kids as marijuana is commercialized in our state? The answer was no one. To solve this problem, Smart Colorado was created. The group, which now has thousands of members, is dedicated to protecting kids as today's high potency marijuana is commercialized. We have played an active role in educating the public, lobbying for protections and engaging on a very difficult issue.

George Brauchler: Must increase mental health & drug treatment programs

As a state, justice and decency dictate that we must do more to combat drug and alcohol abuse, and address the wide range of mental health issues that adversely impact our communities and burden our judicial system. To accomplish this, we will encourage increased availability of treatment programs, as well as educate and empower our residents and families to seek treatment for mental health and substance abuse issues.

Victor Mitchell: Marijuana revenues are being "ripped off" in the status quo

What mostly bothers me about the marijuana amendment 64 is the fact that the revenues are being completely ripped off. There's no transparency in the amount of revenues. There are record pot sails going on today yet we don't even know where the money's going. I'm going to be proposing a bold initiative in which every dollar that comes into the state on marijuana is displayed to all our citizens. Not only how much money is coming in but also where it is going to be allocated.

Victor Mitchell: THC is dangerous, but voters ok'ed the pot amendment

I think we need a better educational plan and marketing efforts to really enlighten people on the short term and long term and serious effects of marijuana. Including today nearly every week there are children being born with THC in their system. These children are being born with long term cognitive disabilities. But that does not mean that I want to repeal it. I think the voters have spoken.

David Hadley: $85 million funding for drug and gang enforcement programs

David Hadley believes that front line police officers must always have the support of our South Bay communities--after all, they literally put their lives on the line everyday protecting our neighborhoods. True to his word, he wrote legislation allocating an extra $85 million to plug a funding hole for drug and gang enforcement programs.

Tina Liebling: War on drugs failed; end prohibition & use pot responsibly

The war on drugs has failed--costing Minnesota taxpayers too much and destroying too many lives. It's time to remove the prohibition on personal use of cannabis and treat addiction as an illness, not a crime.

Cannabis is not harmless, but prohibition of cannabis has not worked and has also caused many unintended, harmful consequences. Minnesotans spend perhaps $700 million per year on illegal cannabis, which they buy without knowing the purity of what they buy. Cannabis prohibition also contributes to racial disparities in our state as it fills expensive prison beds with people who do not belong there. Without prohibition we could do a better job keeping cannabis away from children and educating our population on how to use it responsibly and with regard to the rights of others.

Minnesotans should have the opportunity to decide whether to legalize personal use of cannabis under a careful system of regulation and taxation. Law enforcement should have a voice on drug policy, but never a veto.

Stacey Abrams: Expand list of conditions for medical marijuana

HB 65: Expands the list of conditions for which a patient may register with the Low THC Oil Patient Registry. HB 65 expands the list to include Tourette's syndrome, autism, intractable pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, Alzheimer's disease, human immunodeficiency virus, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Stacey Abrams: Add fentanyl to list of criminalized opioids

HB 213: Updates the Georgia Code to include the drug fentanyl alongside morphine, opium, and heroin. Individuals convicted of felony drug trafficking of fentanyl would be subjected to the same punishments as trafficking those other drugs. MY VOTE: YES

Rich Leopold: Services for people still suffering with addiction

My passion outside public service is for people still suffering with addiction. For nearly 30 years I have volunteered inside treatment centers, jails, and prisons. My individual service is one of the things for which I am the most grateful in this life, and will continue when I am Governor.

I know the value of hard work. I have earned my place, working my way from humble beginnings through perseverance, education, and a dedication to my faith and my family. We cannot go forward with name-calling

Andy McGuire: Fund programs for mental health

The Reynolds administration has ignored the mental health crisis in our state and through regressive policies has only made it worse. Iowa now ranks dead last in the country for the number of psychiatric beds per capita. And our state ranks 47th in the country for the number of psychiatrists per capita. With more than 120,000 Iowans with a serious mental illness, we must do more to address this growing problem...

As governor, I'll make mental health treatment funding a priority instead of cutting it. I believe that when we provide help to those suffering from mental health illnesses before it's too late, we greatly improve quality of life and reduce the demands on our criminal justice system.
