Gubernatorial campaign websites: on Environment

Lupe Valdez: Protect the environment by taking proactive measures

I will make sure Texas is proactively taking steps to protect our environment and invest in our disaster preparedness, rebuild smart and resilient to make sure we are ready for major weather events. Preparing for the future involves collaboration of federal, state, and local so that we can design and implement plans that will protect our homes and coasts from flooding and dangerous storm surges, and safeguard our farmers and rural communities from drought and issues of water insecurity.

Molly Kelly: Make fishing & tourism industries safe from oil spills

I oppose the Trump Administration's plan to open up New Hampshire's coast for offshore oil and gas drilling. We've already seen the devastating environmental and economic damages an oil spill would bring. The fate of our fishing and tourism industries should not rest in the hands of oil companies. I will work with our neighboring states as part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Christine Hallquist: Advocate of environmental protections and mass transit

Protect Vermont's natural environment and waterways with established goals--this is also an economic development issue. Address the realities of climate change through cost effective investment and with economic justice informed decision making. Create an integrated transportation authority to oversee the building of a modern state transportation system and encourage more economical and environmentally friendly mass transit options.

Jeff Johnson: Best stewards of natural resources are those who need them

Minnesota's economy was built on agriculture and natural resources. That's not to say that farming, logging and mining are the only parts that matter, but they provide the rock-solid foundation upon which many other industries have been built. Yet government is doing little but getting in the way of people who work the land. I know what a blessing our natural resources are and that the people whose livelihoods depend upon using them are better stewards of the land than any bureaucrat.

Lori Swanson: Won settlement for corporation to pay $890M for pollution

Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes We need to protect these lakes--and our climate, rivers, forests, and other natural resources for future generations. We should reject the false choice that we cannot both protect our natural resources AND provide economic opportunity to Minnesotans. Lori has already shown the way. She secured the largest environmental settlement in Minnesota history when she got a corporation to pay $890M for decades of pollution.

Bill Lee: Cost-benefit analysis of agricultural regulations

We have to defend and protect our state's Right-to-Farm law, which provides key protections for our farmers to continue doing what they've always done: produce.

Our government shouldn't be in the business of picking winners and losers. Unfortunately, regulations and the cost of those regulations often mean we are putting producers at a disadvantage to serve some other group.

We should make the cost-benefit analysis of regulations more transparent and reflective of who bears most of the impact. When we find--which we will in most cases--that the producer bears a disproportionate share of the impact we have a responsibility to look for alternatives or find new, creative ways to reduce the impact.

It's why I believe it is critical for us to put more agricultural experience into our state regulatory agencies, and to ensure that these agencies have a complete picture of the agriculture supply chain before taking action.

Ben Jealous: Protecting environment will give back economic opportunities

As a life-long environmentalist, I know that protecting our planet is not just a moral imperative, it is an economic opportunity that Maryland can take to propel our state forward. Protecting our environment is as much a question of doing the right thing by ourselves as it is doing right by our kids. I want my children to be able to swim in the Bay for decades and grow up in a state on the cutting edge of the 21st century.

Fred Hubbell: Protect water, air and topsoil resources

As Iowans, we take great pride in our land and natural resources--from our fertile soil to our rivers, lakes and trails. They not only drive our economy, but boost our quality of life. By investing in renewable energy, preserving our topsoil, and bringing together all Iowans to address growing water and air quality concerns, we can ensure that the Iowa we all love is safe and protected for future generations.

Walker Stapleton: Wants states to have seat at table on federal land decisions

The government owns 47% of the land in the West, and the federal laws that govern land management practices place an emphasis on the concept of multiple uses. Federal land management agencies should consult with the states where this land is located and involve them in the decision-making process for how these lands are managed. Together, we can safely develop our natural resources. We can have a booming energy sector, create thousands of well-paying jobs, and protect Colorado's environment.

Andrew Gillum: EPA protects our families from corporate toxic pollution

Andrew is also deeply concerned with Donald Trump and the Republicans' assault on the EPA and its critical role of protecting our children and families from toxic pollution. If Trump and the Republicans roll back critical safeguards like the Clean Air and Water Act, Andrew will act to make sure that Florida implements its own safeguards, so that corporate polluters are not allowed to spew unlimited amounts of mercury, lead, sulfur dioxide or other pollutants into our air and water.

This approach will sharply reduce toxic pollutants like carbon, mercury and sulfur dioxide. As Governor, Andrew will take on the challenge of rebuilding Florida into a more resilient state and protecting our natural resources that make Florida the nation's number one tourist destination. Andrew will make protecting the Everglades a priority, work to keep our water clean from toxic algae blooms, and fight to protect Florida's access to clean water sources.

Andy McGuire: Put teeth into our water quality regulations

We can't afford to wait any longer to address our state's water quality issues. I believe that access to clean water is a basic right that every Iowan deserves. Our state is currently in the middle of a devastating water quality crisis.

When Iowa communities continue to fail tests that measure contaminants such as nitrates and lead in our water that can cause infertility in women and high blood pressure in men we all need to be concerned. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, there are 750 bodies of water with more than 1,000 impairments. I believe that we can do better.

As Governor, I will make the Nutrient Reduction Strategy (NRS) a mandatory goal, rather than voluntary, along with other strategies to work toward managing Phosphorus and Nitrate run-off from fields into our waterways. We must put teeth into our regulations while at the same time recognizing that our farming practices need to address our environmental concerns.

Karl Dean: Cuts to the EPA are unthinkable

Our environment--including access to clean air and clean water--have a big impact on our health. As Mayor of Nashville, Karl was committed to environmental stewardship, creating a dedicated Office of Sustainability. This office worked to expand the city's recycling program, conserve open lands by adding 25 percent more park space and reduce the energy use of government buildings with more efficient features. Karl's administration also worked to reduce pollutants in the city's waterways with new water-sewer infrastructure. Nashville is greener and more environmentally-friendly today because of Karl's leadership.

Current proposed federal budget changes call for historic cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency, a department created to regulate air and water pollutants. The cuts would bring the department's funding to its lowest levels in 40 years. These cuts are unthinkable, especially in the wake of large environmental disasters like the TVA coal ash spill in 2008.

Steve Barlock: Utilize abundant natural resources; no water restrictions

Q: Do you think Colorado should have more control over federal lands within its borders?

A: Yes. I fully support the actions of President Trump relating to working with Utah regarding a more cooperative stance on the use of federal lands than the Obama administration had followed. Specifically, I would support working with our ranching and energy sector in utilizing our abundant natural resources.

Q: Would you support mandatory year-round watering restrictions as part of a plan to conserve more water in Colorado?

A: No. Under Governor Hickenlooper, Colorado gave up 8% of the water it had rights to use. The globalist idea of imposed poverty through scarcity is not the answer for Colorado. I will lead the fight in the courts for Colorado to keep more of its water, and I will not give it freely away to other states as Governor Hickenlooper has done. I am "All in for Colorado" and that starts with our water.

Jay Gonzalez: New revenue to fix our broken mass transit system

We desperately need new revenue for our transportation system. The condition of our transportation infrastructure and commute times in Massachusetts are among the worst in the country, and they are getting worse under the Baker Administration.

We need new revenue to fix our broken MBTA system. We can't keep asking residents to pay more and get less. Governor Baker has jacked up fares on riders and threatened to cut commuter rail service for weekend riders, seniors and the disabled. And his proposed timeline for getting the MBTA into a state of good repair is unacceptable, thanks to his refusal to acknowledge and support the need for new revenue.

We also need to invest more in Regional Transit Authorities that serve the rest of the state. We need to do the South Coast Rail project the right way from the beginning--electrified via the Stoughton route. And that's why we need to seriously explore high-speed rail to Springfield, the North-South Rail Link and the Blue Line extension to Lynn.

Bob Massie: Green Bank: capitalize on what nature provides us

My energy plan will build a prosperous and sustainable future for the commonwealth, where everyone gets to participate while we protect the future of our planet. We will:We can harvest the biggest growth opportunity the Commonwealth has ever seen, by capitalizing on what nature provides us. Massachusetts has some of the best off-shore wind potential in the nation. We could turn renewables into the largest single sector in the state's economy.

Jay Gonzalez: Address water pollution despite Trump administration

The following is a statement from Jay Gonzalez, Democrat for Governor in response to yesterday's Boston Globe story on Governor Baker's decision to abandon plans to address water pollution.

"President Trump's disregard for our environment is yet another example of the ways in which he is taking this country backwards. Rather than aligning himself with President Trump and subjecting our Commonwealth to these dangerous policies, Governor Baker ought to demonstrate real leadership by pressing ahead with plans that will protect our environment. Governor Baker's decision to follow Trump's lead and punt on environmental protection is disappointing and indicative of the kind of lead-from-behind governance we've come to expect from him."

Nate Boulton: Funding water trust fund improves safety & tourism

Nate will work with the legislature to fully fund the land and water trust fund that Iowans approved by an overwhelming majority at the ballot box in 2011. Funding the trust would create a sustainable funding source to begin cleaning up Iowa's waterways through buffer zones and other conservation practices. These efforts would not only lead to safer drinking water, but increase wildlife habitat and expand natural resource tourism in our state. Increasing recreational opportunities for hunting, fishing, hiking, and biking can be a major part of expanding tourism and promoting a better quality of life for Iowans.

Jared Fisher: Teddy Roosevelt environmentalist: Explore new frontiers

Talk to Jared and you will think he's a Democrat because he embraces typical Democratic ideals such as preserving and protecting the environment and exploring new frontiers in renewable energy and solar power. But Jared considers himself a Teddy Roosevelt Republican--and the married dad of four and bicycle shop/bike touring business owner has been a registered Republican for years. The rolling businessman and UNLV grad looks at himself as a moderate who admires the leadership of another moderate Republican--the current governor of Nevada, Brian Sandoval.

Jared Fisher: Eco-tourism promotes economy AND outdoor recreation

We need to bolster our efforts to make Nevada an eco-tourism destination. I acknowledge that Las Vegas in the south and Reno in the north draw much of our attention, but I want to increase heightened awareness and outdoor recreation opportunities in the big, open spaces outside of our metro regions. Our aggressive pursuit of tourism is vital to our economy.

David Hadley: Protect wildlife corridors and marine areas

In the Assembly, David Hadley voted to establish a statewide policy to protect wildlife corridors and to coordinate government efforts to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

A steward of our environment, David Hadley also voted for greater enforcement restrictions that protect our state's marine areas as well as improved standards for measuring air pollution--and, he was the deciding committee vote to ban bullhooks used to inhumanely control elephants.

Delaine Eastin: Pushed landfill cleanup and innovative recycling

As chair of the Governmental Efficiency and Consumer Protection Committee, Eastin carried the biggest landfill cleanup bill in the state's history, and won numerous awards for her innovative recycling legislation. She carried legislation to ensure that local transportation measures were not stalled for years at Caltrans and was awarded the Legislator of the Year Award by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the first Assemblymember and woman to ever win that award.

Jim Renacci: Reduce Washington's adversarial red tape on farms

Agriculture is the backbone of our state's economy and one of the most important economic drivers in the 16th District, which is home to more than 5,000 farms.

The agriculture industry is facing numerous overly burdensome regulations that are threatening our farmers' ability to remain competitive and productive in the 21st century. I consistently hear from farmers in my district about the need to reduce Washington's red tape, bring down the cost of fuel, and keep taxes low.

I recognize that farmers and ranchers' well-being and ability to remain competitive rely on bountiful lands, healthy livestock, and a Federal Government that acts as a partner instead of an adversary. I will continue to be a strong advocate for Ohio's farmers and understand the importance of ensuring that they have the tools they need to produce a stable and affordable food supply.

Tina Liebling: Those who exploit resources should pay for any cleanup

We need not choose between jobs and protecting our environment. Minnesota cannot let corporate greed steal our children's inheritance.

Before we allow corporations to exploit our natural resources, we must make sure the environment is protected and that sufficient financial guarantees are in place to pay for any cleanup. After the fact, we must hold them accountable for any harm they caused. Too often, polluters have made their money and left the cleanup to the taxpayer. We Minnesotans love our natural resources and will have to stay vigilant to make sure we keep them.

Our children deserve to grow up in a healthy environment, whether they live in the city, the country, or somewhere in between. Clean water, clean food, and clean air should be their birthright.

Daniel Biss: Spent his time as a legislator protecting our environment

Daniel currently represents the 9th District in the Illinois State Senate and previously served one term in the Illinois House representing the 17th District. He's spent his time as a legislator expanding access, equity and care for all Illinoisians, fighting for financial security for families, and protecting our environment.

Bob Harlow: Annual tests for heavy metals in all drinking water

Test drinking water annually and pass legislation that gives the governor power to immediately stop polluters if contamination is detected: I will ensure that every Wisconsin resident has clean drinking water by implementing annual tests for heavy metals, petrol-chemicals, and dangerous bacteria for all Wisconsin wells and utilities and by passing legislation that grants the Governor power to immediately stop polluters if contamination is discovered.

Rich Leopold: Let's Go Outside: stewardship of Iowa's land, air, and water

Iowa has beautiful landscapes, lakes, rivers and streams. We should keep it that way! For two decades, Rich Leopold worked as a conservationist--the great outdoors was his "office." And when not at work, he's often found with his family out on the water, hiking in the woods or on the prairie, or exploring Iowa on his motorcycle. When he gets up every day, he would prefer to be outside.

Widely recognized as Iowa's leader on conservation, Rich Leopold was asked to come to the capital city, to lead of one of the most important agencies in state government. From 2007-2010, he directed the Department of Natural Resources. He led more than 1,100 people--and consistently balanced his $200 million budget--as a steward not only of Iowa's land, air, and water, but of taxpayer dollars.

To Rich, "Let's Go Outside" means many things: outside the ineffective political system, outside the current angry rhetoric, outside in the literal sense of enjoying our outdoors.

Danny Drew: Restored Middletown's waterfront & public parks

Marty Jackley: Protect agricultural communities from the EPA's overreach

The State Attorneys General have led the fight to protect our agricultural and business communities from the EPA's overreach. I appreciate the President's recognition of the attempted overreach by the EPA and the Corps on WOTUS, and am hopeful that these federal agencies will draft a new rule, which will recognize states' rights.
