Gubernatorial campaign websites: on Families & Children

Lupe Valdez: Pro paid sick leave; choosing job over sick family is wrong

We must fight to pass paid sick leave across Texas, not shut down efforts on a local level. No one should have to choose between a job or caring for a sick loved one.

Molly Kelly: Supports and will sign for paid family and medical leave

As governor, I will: Sign paid family and medical leave that will allow everyone to be with their loved ones in times of need, such as new parents or when family members experience a medical crisis; Pass legislation requiring businesses to give adequate notice to employees on schedule changes so that families can plan for child care.

Christine Hallquist: Pass paid family and medical leave insurance

Pass paid family and medical leave insurance so Vermonters don't have to choose between caring for family members and their job security.

Mike Dunleavy: Fought for parents to raise kids according to their values

During the five years I served in the State Senate, no legislator worked harder to protect families from government overreach, and to defend the rights of parents to raise and educate their children according to their values.

Lori Swanson: Find options to make childcare affordable

There are at least 600K Minnesota families with a child age 12 or younger, many of whom rely on child care providers. But the average annual cost of childcare at a center can be up to $16,000 per year. Many middle-class and low-income families simply cannot afford childcare. We need to do better: We should consider common-sense licensure reforms to make it easier to start a childcare business and cheaper to operate one, while making sure to adequately protect children in the care of others.

Bill Lee: My faith informs my view of marriage

Marriage is between a man and a woman. My faith informs my view of marriage. And as a conservative, I know that outside of the democratic process the Supreme Court imposed a new interpretation of the Constitution that was contrary to all historical evidence and understanding of the institution of marriage.

Cary Kennedy: Expand access to contraception

Having the ability to choose to start a family when one is ready has social, economic, educational and health benefits for women and their families. Having access to contraception increases access to financial stability, higher education and career opportunities.

The Affordable Care Act included access to all forms of birth control as part of basic preventative health care, and without a copay. Even before the Affordable Care Act, Colorado passed legislation that prevents insurers from charging women more for the health coverage, and required insurers to cover contraception and maternity care. Women with private insurance are also now able to pick up a year of birth control at once. We can increase access by ensuring that all women have this opportunity, regardless of what type of insurance they have.

We must fight back. That is why I support policies that make sense, will help more people, and support access to sexual and reproductive health care for everyone.

Bob Massie: Support Raise Up Agenda of paid family leave

Our economy is upside down; productivity has increased 70% in 40 years but wages have gone up only 8%. We need a more inclusive and more democratic economy that supports working people and our local communities. As governor, I will:The New Economy is already rising up in our midst. Now we need a governor who understands these forces and can support their growing and positive impact on our local communities.

J.B. Pritzker: Public/private partnership must invest in poor kids

I've become a national leader in supporting early childhood education and helped improve teacher training. I'm proud of working with some great local non-profit organizations to expand Illinois school breakfast program to 55,000 low-income students, and to change the law so that an additional 175,000 more kids are getting the breakfast they need to start their days off right.

Cary Kennedy: Help at-risk low-income kids with nurse home visits

Cary developed School Readiness legislation that brought additional federal funding to Colorado which helped child care providers serving low-income children improve their quality and serve more children.

While serving as State Treasurer Cary helped secure sustainable funding for a program that provides nurse home visits for low-income at-risk moms throughout Colorado. The program helps first-time moms have healthy pregnancies and gain the knowledge needed to become the best parents.

Delaine Eastin: Prop 10: Raise tobacco taxes for early childhood development

She took on the tobacco companies and helped pass Proposition 10, the measure that increased taxes on tobacco products, created First Five California and directed most of the revenue to early childhood development. When lawmakers worked with Governor Schwarzenegger to try and take this money to balance the state budget, Eastin said NO. Voters agreed with her.

Tina Liebling: High quality child care is essential for work

Every Minnesota child--without exception--deserves the best possible start in life. High quality child care is essential for many Minnesota families. Parents can't focus on work or school unless they know their children are in a safe and supportive place, but high quality child care is in short supply and too often unaffordable.

We must support many models of child care--from home day care to Head Start--so families have convenient and high quality options. Minnesota has a Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) to help more working parents afford the cost, but it is underfunded and leaves many struggling families without help. Building an excellent, affordable system of day care and support for our youngest kids is one of the most important things Minnesota can do for our future.

Marty Jackley: Save children from sexual exploitation and trafficking

I am proud to announce the national "Campaign for Child Rescue" to save children from sexual exploitation and trafficking. There is no higher or more urgent priority in law enforcement than protecting our children. Law enforcement in every state is locked in a high tech fight to rescue children from child pornographers and traffickers. The Campaign for Child Rescue provides the new technology to identify and share information for law enforcement investigators.

Andy McGuire: Time for state Family/Medical Leave Act

As a mother of seven, I know the challenges of raising a family while balancing a career. When I gave birth to my second child, Hugh, I had to be back at work just three days later. This scenario happens all too often and extra time off from work is an expensive luxury when there is no paycheck attached to the extra time at home.

I think this is wrong, and it's time to finally have paid family and medical leave for all Iowans.
