Gubernatorial campaign websites: on Homeland Security

Lupe Valdez: Wants all veterans to receive the benefits they have earned

As a former US Army National Guard Captain, I have seen too many veterans who have served our country heroically return home with a lack of access to healthcare, sustainable housing and reintegration services. This is unacceptable, we can and must do more to treat our veterans with the dignity and respect they have earned.

Molly Kelly: Take care of the veterans and meet their needs

As the daughter of a World War II veteran, I will never waver in supporting the men and women who have fought to keep our state and country safe. We must honor their sacrifices and ensure they have the care their need. As governor, I will: Fully fund New Hampshire's Veterans Home so that every veteran has access to a bed; and ensure the veterans service office is fully staffed to help New Hampshire veterans receive the benefits they've earned.

Philip Levine: Military veterans should receive the benefits they deserve

Philip Levine appreciates the incredible contribution and sacrifice that our men and women in uniform and their families give to our country. Our men and women in uniform risk their lives for our country, and they deserve the best healthcare, quality of life, and career opportunities back home. Philip will work to make sure our 1.5 million veterans are cared for, and to provide affordable housing and support for our state's many homeless veterans.

Allan Fung: Property tax exemptions for disabled veterans

As Mayor, Allan has been at the forefront of listening to, and caring for his local veterans. Cranston became the first community in Rhode Island to provide a property tax exemption for its disabled veterans. So here's what Allan is going to do: Make Military Pensions Tax Exempt. Expand Locations for our Veterans Affairs Offices. Expand Job Opportunities for Veterans. We'll also ensure that veterans hiring preferences in state government and at the universities are in place and being adhered to.

Fred Hubbell: Respects and honors the military's courage and sacrifices

"Today [Veterans Day] we honor those whose service and sacrifice our nation was forged upon, offering our heartfelt gratitude and respect for all they have done," said Fred Hubbell. "These courageous men and women are the reason we live freely in our great country. We owe a debt to each and every veteran and their families. Your strength inspires our nation."

Cary Kennedy: Tax deductions for veterans, plus more state services

Colorado is home to almost half a million American heroes who faithfully served our country in uniform. It is our responsibility to ensure that we stand by these brave men and women. Our country made a promise to them in return for these sacrifices and as governor I will fight to make sure these sacrifices and commitments are not forgotten.

Most services for our veterans are provided by the federal government so I will work hand in hand with our Congressional delegation to hold Washington accountable to deliver what our veterans need and are entitled to. But there are also additional steps the state can and should take to support our veterans. These include:

Catherine Templeton: SC builds soldiers & embraces our heroes

In South Carolina, we build soldiers! When it is time for them to come home, we have to embrace our heroes with a sense of community that recognizes the experiences our Veterans have had, supports what they need as civilians, and capitalizes on the unique skills they bring to the table.

Andrew White: Help first responders with citizen-led response teams

I'm against not preparing for something we know will happen. "You can borrow my boat" worked for Harvey, but it's not a strategy we should rely on. I'll organize a statewide effort to create citizen-led, neighborhood response teams that can assist 1st responders in the event of a major natural catastrophe/terrorist event. These teams will catalog their skill sets. They'll organize a leader, agree on a communications plan, perform annual training exercises and coordinate with local officials.

Adam Putnam: Make Florida the most military friendly & vet friendly state

Adam knows that no one understands our constitutional freedoms better than our veterans. He is committed to honoring the sacrifices made by our country's military and families. Adam launched "Operation Outdoor Freedom," which offers wounded veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces hunting and fishing opportunities, at no cost to them. He is committed to making Florida the most military- and veteran-friendly state in the nation.

George Brauchler: Uniformed service includes tour in Iraq

In uniformed service to my country [as a colonel in the Colorado Army National Guard],among more than twenty years of assignments and challenges, I have been called upon to train our military prosecutors throughout the country and across the world. I have been mobilized twice since 9/11 and served as the Chief of Military Justice for Fort Carson, and ultimately, the US Division-North, 4th Infantry Division, Taskforce Ironhorse in Tikrit, Iraq.

Victor Mitchell: "Big brother government" is terribly intrusive

I don't support any new tax increase I don't care how big or how small. Yes we desperately need infrastructure here in Colorado but Colorado department of transportation is has become terribly political. We can use so much in technology and traffic science today to solve so many of our problems with traffic. I can't stand red light camera systems. In fact, I think it's terribly intrusive. For big brother government to fleece our citizens in the spirit of what they call public safety.

Connie Pillich: Advocate for veterans, financially and community

As a State Representative, Connie worked with Democrats and Republicans in support of military service members by introducing bipartisan legislation to connect veterans to their benefits, help military families meet the financial challenges of military transfers, and help veterans and their families get back to work.

Connie continues to advocate for veterans and the military community and serves on the boards of the Truman National Security Project, Vote Vets, and the Resurrecting Lives Foundation

David Garcia: Trained as a nuclear/bio/chemical warfare specialist

Prior to attending college, David R. Garcia proudly served in the U.S. Army Infantry, where he excelled as an expert marksman, was awarded the Humanitarian Award and the Army Achievement Medal, and was trained as a Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare Specialist.

David Hadley: Strong champion for the Los Angeles Air Force Base

David Hadley is a strong champion for the Los Angeles Air Force Base and the law he authored allowing military families to seek enrollment of their children--regardless of where they live--in the best school district for their family is considered by many the most significant state legislation in many years that supports LAAFB.

A co-sponsor of a bill that could provide veterans more start-up capital for their new businesses, David Hadley also backed a measure protecting the property tax exemption for veteran organizations. He wrote legislation removing the DMV fee veterans pay to print the word "Veteran" on their driver licenses as well as voting for more available funding for veteran housing and mental health services.

Jim Renacci: Ensure Armed Forces have resources they need; end sequester

One of my most important responsibilities is to ensure that our Armed Forces have the resources they need in order to protect our national security, both at home and abroad. That is why I have consistently supported policies that provide our military with the right tools during active duty and the benefits they deserve as veterans for their commitment and service to our great nation.

In an increasingly dangerous world, it is critical that we do not let a difficult fiscal environment threaten our ability to keep the American people safe. The President's sequester threatens our national security as it drastically reduces defense spending while ignoring the primary drivers of our debt. This is why in May and Dec. 2012, I voted in support of legislation that would have provided specific, planned spending reductions in order to replace the across the board sequester cuts for one year. As we evaluate proposals to reduce our debt, we must ensure that we do not cut core defense needs.

Tim Walz: Enlisted in Army National Guard at 17; served for 24 years

Tim's parents, Jim and Darlene, instilled in him the values that continue to guide his commitment to the common good and selfless service. Summers of farming with his family reinforced these lessons.

Tim's dedication to public service began soon after his graduation from Butte (Nebraska) High School with his 24 classmates. At the age of 17, Tim enlisted in the Army National Guard. Tim's leadership was recognized: in 1989, he was name Nebraska Citizen-Soldier of the Year.

"I loved growing up in a small town in rural Nebraska. Small-town life and working on family farms each summer taught me fundamental lessons about the importance of family and the value of hard work. I had wonderful public school teachers, great neighbors, and loving parents."

Upon his 1990 return from teaching in China, Tim served full time in the Army National Guard [for the next 24 years]. He joined his battalion overseas in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Tim Walz: Suicide prevention programs & mental health for veterans

Tim's bill to help reduce the number of veteran suicides passed unanimously and was signed by President Obama. The Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act helps make current VA suicide prevention programs more effective by creating incentives to attract more psychiatrists to the VA, creating a central website to better connect veterans with VA mental health services, and improving connections & coordination between the VA & non-profit mental health organizations providing services.
