Enhanced coordination at the local level and other creative solutions will provide more opportunity for our children. It will take a more intelligent and innovative approach if we are to provide the skills and knowledge necessary for the next generation to succeed.
Unfortunately, this administration has launched a regulatory assault on America's power sector, which threatens to destroy countless jobs and drive up the price of energy.
I will continue to be a strong proponent of an "all of the above" policy that protects Ohio's energy supply and the jobs that rely on it. Not only will this approach create new American jobs, it will strengthen our national security, lower energy prices, and improve our energy independence. It is critical that we utilize all of our resources, including natural gas, clean coal, and American-sourced oil, as well as alternative energy sources such as wind, solar, hydropower.
The agriculture industry is facing numerous overly burdensome regulations that are threatening our farmers' ability to remain competitive and productive in the 21st century. I consistently hear from farmers in my district about the need to reduce Washington's red tape, bring down the cost of fuel, and keep taxes low.
I recognize that farmers and ranchers' well-being and ability to remain competitive rely on bountiful lands, healthy livestock, and a Federal Government that acts as a partner instead of an adversary. I will continue to be a strong advocate for Ohio's farmers and understand the importance of ensuring that they have the tools they need to produce a stable and affordable food supply.
While there are several parts of the law that I do support, such as eliminating spending caps on essential benefits, preventing insurers from unjustly cancelling policies, closing the Medicare Part D "doughnut hole," and increasing wellness incentives, the President's health care reform law does not effectively address any of the cost issues that prevent Americans from receiving appropriate health care.
I support health care reform that allows consumers to purchase insurance across state lines, and I believe that tort reform will reduce health care costs further.
In an increasingly dangerous world, it is critical that we do not let a difficult fiscal environment threaten our ability to keep the American people safe. The President's sequester threatens our national security as it drastically reduces defense spending while ignoring the primary drivers of our debt. This is why in May and Dec. 2012, I voted in support of legislation that would have provided specific, planned spending reductions in order to replace the across the board sequester cuts for one year. As we evaluate proposals to reduce our debt, we must ensure that we do not cut core defense needs.
As a Certified Public Accountant and former business owner for nearly 30 years, I can attest that our tax code is broken. It is too complex, contains too many loopholes, and serves as a barrier to job growth. I have advocated for a simpler tax code that will encourage our small businesses to hire and expand, while also providing relief to individuals and families who continue to grapple with the complexities of our current system.
Comprehensive tax reform will lead to the creation of thousands of new jobs and a healthy economy. It's time for a fairer, flatter tax code that is more transparent and accountable to the taxpayer.
