Gubernatorial campaign websites: on Social Security

Jeff Johnson: End the taxation of social security benefits

I believe we need to cut taxes and reduce the size and power of government. We'll start by cutting income taxes, the death tax and license tab fees, ending the taxation of social security benefits and instituting an Automatic Taxpayer Refund when government over-taxes Minnesotans.

Yancey McGill: Only 4% of SC seniors are served by the government

The quality of life for our seniors must be a top priority. Due to the corruption and wasteful spending within our state government, the full needs of our senior citizens are not being met. They deserve respect and real reforms that will make their lives better.

South Carolina's senior population is approaching 1 million, but only about 4% are served by the government. We can do better, and we must do better.

As South Carolina's Director of the Office on Aging, I always kept the needs of seniors first in my heart and in my actions. I visited every senior center in South Carolina as part of my personal assessment of the quality of service provided to our seniors. I worked to directly support direct service providers. I initiated an outside audit of the Office on Aging that enabled me to reorganize staff, re-set priorities, improve communication across all levels of the Office, and improve food safety and training processes.

Bob Harlow: Balance budget but protect Social Security and Medicare

Bob's Statement on the Republican Tax Bill: America needs a balanced budget that protects Social Security and Medicare and makes investments in innovation, infrastructure and defense. The Republican party doesn't care. They have one priority while in power: Max out Uncle Sam's credit card and send checks to their donors.

David Hadley: Raise state employee retirement age & make pensions portable

David Hadley is working to reform the unfair public employee retirement system because he's keenly aware of its skyrocketing $17.5 billion annual cost as well as the more than $200 billion in unfunded liabilities. He believes public pensions must make more sense for taxpayers while also giving public employees more portability of their vested retirement rights when they change careers.

Because public pension costs are clearly jeopardizing vital local government services, David Hadley authored a bill allowing local non-public-safety agencies the option-- through the collective bargaining process--of increasing the retirement age to 65 years for newly hired employees.

Ed Perlmutter: Opposes private accounts for Social Security

Colorado has one of the fastest growing senior populations in the country. In Jefferson County alone, the older population is expected to grow 56% by the year 2020. Ed strongly believes we need to keep our promise to senior citizens and tomorrow's retirees to maintain Social Security. He opposes "privatization" or private accounts for Social Security payroll contributions and supports removing the cap on payroll taxes ensuring the wealthiest people pay their fair share. He supports further Congressional oversight and investigation to identify ways to keep Social Security solvent. In order to serve the changing demographic in our district, Ed hosts Senior Resource Fairs to connect seniors, family members, and caretakers with non-profit organizations, government programs, and resources in the community

Daniel Biss: Help give retirement security to millions of workers

Daniel has taken the initiative to raise and make progress on issues significant to the future of Illinois that would have otherwise gone unaddressed, like helping giving retirement security to millions of Illinois workers and addressing the fast-evolving problem of technology and privacy. He combines the discipline and pragmatism of a math professor with the tenacity of an organizer in everything he does.
