On Abortion: Opposed law disclosing abortion rights to women

McDermott called out the legislation's pro-abortion motivations as his colleagues voted, 41-10, to send the bill to the governor's desk. [The Hawaii bill required all abortion counselors--pro and con--to inform clients that free abortions were guaranteed under state law.

On Education: Sues state over overcrowded school

McDermott filed a class action lawsuit against the state over claims that Campbell High School is "grossly" overcrowded and nothing being done to address it. The suit also asks for air conditioning for Campbell, which currently has more than 3,200 students, nearly twice its capacity McDermott also wants improved capacity in the cafeteria, which only has room for 890 children.

On Welfare & Poverty: Let homeless sleep in driveways

Hawaii is exploring allowing homeless people to camp in "safe zones" or to rent space in private driveways, to address its homelessness crisis, among the worst in the nation. "I think everyone's just trying to nibble away at the edge of this homeless issue, providing as many alternatives as possible," said McDermott, a co-sponsor of the driveway bill. "Most states, there's plenty of land. We're ocean-locked, we're on an island, and there's only so many places you can go."
