2018 House MI elections: on Education

Brenda Jones: Federally fund state & public higher education choices

Higher education should be attainable by everyone. Education and real-world training in a 21st century environment should not be out of reach. Strengthening HBCU's in the country should be a priority, which will provide fair and equal opportunities. Wholly funding trade schools, community colleges, state universities and HBCU's in the federal budget will: Alleviate national student debts, Improve the quality of schools; and Boost the economy by creating small business owners and higher wages.

Rashida Tlaib: Tuition-free higher education, including trade schools

The cost of higher education is a major barrier for many people, and we must make public colleges, universities, and trade schools tuition free for working families.

Brenda Jones: Universal education plan: early education through college

Q: How will you help the American public improve their economic positions?

A: Our laws must ensure that the American dream is a realistic goal for every family. This will remain my top priority. This means creating a universal education plan (that includes college, skilled-trades, and early childhood education), and strengthening national labor laws to protect our hard-working men & women. I will work to remove obstacles that prevent individuals from achieving economic stability.

Elissa Slotkin: Earn-while-you-learn at community colleges

Q: What federal policies do you support to help members of all strata of the American public improve their economic positions?

Elissa Slotkin: Between stagnant wages and rising prices, it's become harder to get ahead. And the very American idea that if you work 40 hours a week and play by the rules, you'll do well and your kids will do better is out of grasp for too many. It doesn't have to be this way; we have vacancies in cyber jobs, advanced manufacturing, and skilled trades. We need to make sure our schools are preparing kids for these jobs. In Congress, I will work to provide federal support for earn-while-you-learn programs at local universities and community colleges to make sure businesses are hiring Michiganders for the best jobs in the state.

Andy Levin: Universal public education, starting with preschool

We must stop short-changing our kids. Every child, regardless of their zip code, deserves a high-quality education that provides them with the resources, instruction and support necessary to help them reach their full potential. When I get to Congress, I will advocate for universal public education, starting with preschool and including excellent K-12 schools under local control with well-compensated and well-respected teachers. We must invest in our kids to build a strong future for Michigan. We also need adequate funding for students to attend college so they aren't buried in debt when they graduate.

And we need community colleges and apprenticeships offering training and retraining for middle skill jobs across many industries. We need to help our workers transition to the jobs of tomorrow, like we did with "No Worker Left Behind." A university education is not, and should not be, the only path to a decent living.
