2018 House MI elections: on Environment

Debbie Dingell: Called on EPA to maintain & strengthen Clean Water Act

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has repealed, diluted or otherwise weakened many crucial parts of the Clean Water Act -- often at the behest of big polluters and in opposition to science and the public interest. Congress has the authority to block these attacks on America's clean water. Reps. Debbie Dingell and Chris Pappas filed a resolution calling on the EPA to maintain and strengthen the Clean Water Act and end ongoing Trump administration efforts to undermine it.

Brenda Jones: Close loopholes that exempt drilling & fracking from EPA

Promoting clean energy incentives and expanding renewable energy projects will be essential to moving the U.S. toward a clean energy economy and I will push for these programs at every opportunity. I will work to close loopholes that exempt drilling and fracking operations from basic environmental protections provided by laws such as the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act.

Rashida Tlaib: Fight to cleanup environment and undo EPA's budget cuts

Here in Southeast Michigan we've got a lot of big polluters getting away with poisoning our community. They think because we're not the richest communities, and because of the color of our skin, that they can get away with it. But I'm raising my family in this community and I'm not going to let them poison our air and pollute our water and dump waste on our soil. I'll fight to undo the cuts the Trump Administration has made to the EPA's budget and hold polluters accountable.

Brenda Jones: Protect wildlife and national parks from private interests

Q: What policies do you support to meet U.S. energy needs while protecting our water, air and land for current and future generations? Explain how those actions or policies would affect the future of the Great Lakes.

Brenda Jones: I support fully funding the EPA to ensure monitoring and enforcing environmental standards including the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. And protecting wildlife and national parks from private interests such as drilling, fracking and mining.

Elissa Slotkin: Protecting our Great Lakes must be a top priority

Q: What policies do you support to meet U.S. energy needs while protecting our water, air and land for current and future generations? Explain how those actions or policies would affect the future of the Great Lakes.

Elissa Slotkin: Protecting our Great Lakes, inland waters, and drinking water must be a top priority. As a former national security analyst, I believe we need to think of environmental security the way we do about homeland security: it's about the safety of our kids. If elected, I would help reinvigorate the Great Lakes caucus; push for a comprehensive, ten-year environmental plan for Michigan; and work to manage and mitigate the impact of warming temperatures. Line 5 is decades old, it gets shut down when the waves are too high, and enormous concerns have been raised by Republicans and Democrats--it should be shut down immediately.

Rashida Tlaib: Fight invasive species & pollution in the Great Lakes

Q: How would your policies would affect the future of the Great Lakes.

Rashida Tlaib: Water issues are as important in Michigan as anywhere--I've spoken out against poor Detroiters having their water turned off and against the greed that caused the Flint catastrophe. The Great Lakes define who we are as Michiganders, and we need to fight invasive species, pollution, and greedy companies like Nestle. We need to fully fund the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, and we need to shut down Line 5.
