Slotkin said she was not beholden to Democratic leaders or corporate special interests. She said she would not support Nancy Pelosi as House Democratic leader or accept corporate contributions to her campaign.
Andy Levin: Our democracy is under attack, from gerrymandering, hidden corporate money, and voter suppression. We have to make sure every citizen can vote; we have to get unlimited money out of politics; and we have to establish nonpartisan redistricting. But we must do more, and turn democracy from a spectator sport in which people simply vote every few years--with ever-lower turnout, it seems--to a sport in which we all participate to debate the issues, defend our interests and demand our rights.
Brenda Jones: I support making voting accessible to every American. Congress must work to eliminate the impact of discriminatory voter suppression laws and practices across the country. In order to do this, I will fight to implement measures to automate voter registration, expand early and mail-in voting, and increase funding for our local clerks' offices.
Brenda Jones: I will work to pass laws to eliminate dark money in federal elections. and reduce the influence of corporate dollars on campaigns.
Elissa Slotkin: Political gerrymandering and our current campaign finance laws are two of the clearest factors contributing to political dysfunction today. Much of this can be traced back to the U.S. Supreme Court decision that allowed corporate money to flood into our system through political action committees (PACs). That's why I made a commitment to not accept corporate PAC money, and if elected, I will work on campaign finance reform legislation within my first year in Congress. Voting rights are fundamental to our democracy. We should be making it easier to legally vote, not harder. This should never be a partisan issue.
Haley Stevens: Our current system is set up to benefit the wealthy and well-connected. We need to fix that or Congress will continue to pass trillion dollar corporate giveaways like the Republicans' abhorrent tax bill. That's why we need to overturn Citizens United so that anonymous billionaires cannot buy our elections. Just as importantly, we need to expand access to the ballot. In a Democracy it is our fundamental right to vote, which is why we need to fully reinstate the Voting Rights Act and protect our citizens' ability to make our voices heard.
Rashida Tlaib: We must overturn Citizens United to ensure all of our voices are heard. We need to explore public financing models that allow politicians more time to talk to voters and that end the dependence of politicians on big money donors and corporate interests. We must also restore the Voting Rights Act and fight back against voter suppression that targets minorities and tries to silence us. We need to make voter registration automatic for 18 year olds, allow returning citizens to vote, expand early voting and vote by mail, and in general do whatever we can to make participating in the democratic process easier.
