2018 House MI elections: on Health Care

Haley Stevens: Lower prescription drug costs for Medicare beneficiaries

Stevens on Rx costs: "The exorbitant cost of prescription drugs is forcing countless families in my district to make the impossible choice between taking care of their health and putting food on the table. We cannot tolerate a system that is causing 3 in 10 adults to not take their medication as prescribed due to high costs." Stevens introduced the Maximizing Drug Coverage for Low-Income Senior Act, designed to lower the cost of prescription drugs that Medicare beneficiaries struggle to pay for.

Brenda Jones: Supports a single-payer Medicare-for-All healthcare system

I firmly stand by implementing a single-payer Medicare-for-All system in the country. Healthcare is a right and the United States is the only major developed country that does not guarantee this right. Along with supporting a Medicare-for-All system, which will negotiate prescription drug prices internationally, I will also support a campaign to get the remainder of Congressional Democrats on board with this human right.

Elissa Slotkin: Support ObamaCare's coverage of pre-existing conditions

Key messages: Slotkin highlighted [GOP opponent Mike] Bishop's support for the House Republican plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. She said her mother's death from ovarian cancer made her dedicated to ensuring coverage of pre-existing conditions and that the Republican plan would have prevented this.

Rashida Tlaib: Medicare-for-All: healthcare is a right, not a privilege

I'll fight for Medicare-for-All that guarantees health care as a right, not a privilege. No person should have to skip doctor's appointments or prescription refills because they can't afford it, and I'll get to work in Washington protecting the Affordable Care Act but also working to cover the gaps it still leaves. We're the only major nation on Earth that does not guarantee healthcare for its residents.

Andy Levin: Medicare-for-All is first step toward basic morality

Q: What are your concerns and plans regarding U.S. health care policies and programs, including those affecting maternal and child health?

Andy Levin: Health care must be universal. I believe most Americans are sick and tired of talking about health insurance and coverage when we should be talking about quality care. As the father of two sons who live with Crohn's disease, I understand the physical, emotional, and financial toll of chronic illness. Enough is enough. Let us say plainly that as a matter of basic morality, there are things that should not be left to the market to decide. One is that every man, woman and child will have proper medical care from birth to old age, and I believe Medicare for All is the first step in that direction.

Brenda Jones: Single-payer system is best, without individual mandate

Q: What are your concerns and plans regarding U.S. health care policies and programs, including those affecting maternal and child health?

Brenda Jones: My concerns with today's healthcare system include elimination of the individual mandate to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, prescription drug prices for seniors on Medicare and Healthcare for all (including dental and vision) & paid maternity leave. A single-payer healthcare system is the best answer to ensure the health and welfare of our nation. I will work to protect every American, especially our veterans, because healthcare should be a human right. Congress must continue to work on more inclusive legislation until no one is without healthcare, prescription, vision or dental coverage.

Elissa Slotkin: Buy-in to Medicare; then negotiate drug prices

Q: What are your concerns and plans regarding U.S. health care policies and programs, including those affecting maternal and child health?

Elissa Slotkin: Healthcare is our generational challenge to fix. It's also a personal issue for me: my mom died of ovarian cancer after struggling with healthcare her whole life due to her pre-existing condition of breast cancer. While the Affordable Care Act made important strides, it desperately needs reform. One thing I would do is push to create a buy-in to Medicare, which would bring down costs for individuals and provide relief to businesses. The government should have the authority to negotiate drug prices under Medicare, and we must work to curb the predatory price increases we've seen on EpiPens, insulin, and other drugs.

Haley Stevens: Protect ObamaCare: health care is a right, not a privilege

Q: What are your concerns and plans regarding U.S. health care policies and programs, including those affecting maternal and child health?

Haley Stevens: I believe that health care is a right, not a privilege. Every American deserves access to affordable, high-quality health care. We need to protect and improve the Affordable Care Act by fully implementing it. We also must take steps toward lowering prescription drug prices, first and foremost by letting the federal government use the full weight of its bargaining power to reduce costs for Medicare. And it is totally unacceptable that in the greatest country on earth any child goes without health care. We must improve and strengthen the Children's Health Insurance Program.

Rashida Tlaib: ObamaCare was step in direction toward universal healthcare

Q: What are your concerns and plans regarding U.S. health care policies and programs, including those affecting maternal and child health?

Rashida Tlaib: I strongly believe in universal healthcare for all. The Affordable Care Act was a step in the right direction, but people are still paying outrageous prices, driven by insurance companies, for healthcare. No one should have to go into debt to for medication and lifesaving procedures. A society in which everyone has access to healthcare coverage will result in a drastic improvement in quality of life for those facing chronic health conditions, women, and children. We should be increasing funds available to support maternal and child health, and I support paid family and sick leave for all.

Andy Levin: Medicare-for-All; address prescription drug cost

Having access to quality health care and affordable prescription drugs shouldn't be contingent upon your zip code. As the father of two sons who live with Crohn's disease, I understand the physical, emotional, and financial toll of chronic illness and why it is so important that we pass Medicare for All and address the astronomical costs of prescription drugs. I will not only fight any efforts to deprive Michigan families of medical care, I will work to ensure access to health care for every American.
