2018 House MI elections: on Immigration

Brenda Jones: Congress should create reasonable pathway for immigration

I will introduce meaningful immigration reform allowing families who are living and working in the U.S. to have a realistic opportunity to avoid separation and be able to continue contributing to our economy. Real immigration reform also means that people from across the globe who want to call the U.S. home should be able to do this within a reasonable amount of time. Congress must create a reasonable pathway to immigration for anyone who is willing to pay taxes and contribute to the US economy.

Rashida Tlaib: Provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented & DREAMers

I'm the daughter of immigrants to this country, and I want those who come to our borders seeking a better life to have the same opportunities I've had. We must provide a clear pathway to citizenship for all undocumented Americans, we must dismantle our deportation machine and detention centers, and we must enhance access to justice for immigrants availing themselves of our legal system. We must protect DREAMers and welcome asylum-seekers. We must be guided by empathy, not fear.

Andy Levin: Founded IRATE:Immigration Reform/Advocacy/Training/Education

Q: What are your concerns and plans regarding U.S. immigration policy?

A: We need comprehensive immigration reform. I've been active on this issue for decades, ever since I co-founded a group called Immigration Reform, Advocacy, Training and Education after the Immigration Reform and Control Act was passed. We need a reasonable system where people who have spent "x" number of years living, working and paying taxes here, can become citizens of this country over time. Ripping families with clean records apart simply because they came to the U.S. illegally or overstayed a visa many years ago is immoral and counterproductive. Immigrants embody the American the dream.

Brenda Jones: Protect DREAMers, and pathway to citizenship for others

Q: What are your concerns and plans regarding U.S. immigration policy?

A: Recently, I met a family whose father was deported after 26 years of being here in the U.S. This man was not a criminal and was targeted for deportation. This is wrong. While I support removing any criminal element from our population, our immigration policies need a comprehensive reform. This must include protecting our Dreamers, and creating a realistic pathway to citizenship for our undocumented individuals. Some of our citizens were brought here as slaves and had to fight to gain true citizenship. We should not have to repeat this painful history. I will advocate for a compassionate approach to this issue.

Elissa Slotkin: Path to citizenship for DREAMers; then comprehensive reform

Q: What are your concerns and plans regarding U.S. immigration policy?

Elissa Slotkin: I believe that immigration is a moral, economic, and national security issue--and right now our immigration system isn't working for anyone. Our elected representatives have failed to address the public outcry for reform. We need to buckle down and pass comprehensive legislation that brings in workers when we need their specific skills; provides a pathway to citizenship to DREAMers; increases border security; and provides safe-haven, as we have since the Founding Fathers, for refugees escaping death in their home countries. And once we pass a comprehensive law, we need to rigorously enforce it.

Haley Stevens: Comprehensive reform, with long-term solution for DREAMers

Q: What are your concerns and plans regarding U.S. immigration policy?

A: For generations families have come to America seeking a better life for themselves, their children, and their grandchildren. We are a nation of immigrants, but sadly our immigration system today is broken. It can and must be fixed without tearing apart families who come here in pursuit of the American dream. Let's pass comprehensive immigration reform that includes increased border security and a long term solution for our DREAMERs. I do not believe Congress should be in the business of punishing children brought to America through no choice of their own.

Rashida Tlaib: Pathway to citizenship for all undocumented residents

Q: What are your plans regarding U.S. immigration policy?

A: I have seen first-hand the devastation our broken immigration system has had on families who worked to escape unimaginable desperate and dangerous circumstances in order to start fresh and achieve their own American dream. I support a pathway to citizenship for all undocumented residents, protecting our DACA recipients, and at minimum major reforms to ICE and CBP so they stop preying on women and children and destroying families.
