Survey of 2018 House campaign websites: on Civil Rights

Sean Casten: Support LGBT Americans who want to serve in the military

Support the inclusion of all qualified Americans who want to serve their country in the military. I will protect the rights of LGBT members who are bravely serving in our military and I oppose President Trump's ban on transgender service in the military as unnecessary and discriminatory. The military has long been at the forefront of equal opportunity, recognizing that the best military employs the best people--not just the ones that fit a specific racial, gender or sexuality profile.

Sean Casten: LGBTQ rights are human rights

LGBTQ rights are human rights, period. Support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to ensure that LGBTQ workers cannot be discriminated against in the workplace and hiring process. Support the Equality Act, which will expand upon our civil rights legislation to ensure non-discrimination protections against LGBTQ Americans in "employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service."

Jason Crow: Cosponsored the Voting Rights Advancement Act

America's democratic institutions and the rule of law must be defended. I spent time in countries where fundamental rights--like the right to vote--aren't guaranteed. So I know that we must protect those rights here at home. That's why I cosponsored the Voting Rights Advancement Act to help ensure that all Americans who are eligible to vote can exercise that right.

Jason Crow: No one should face gender/orientation discrimination

No American should face discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation. Our LGBTQ neighbors continue to be a target of hate, discrimination, and unequal treatment under the law. We should continually strive to expand marriage equality, workplace protections, enforcement of hate crime laws, and protections for LGBTQ military personnel and veterans. I am fighting to ensure that LGBTQ Americans have the same rights that all Americans should have, cosponsoring the Equality Act.

Michael Cloud: Against discrimination against people of faith

The Constitution is clear that the free exercise of religion shall not be prohibited. Michael will stand strong against government attempts to discriminate against people of faith. We need Representation that recognizes the essential role of the family--and works to enact policies that recognize parental rights, respect marriage and protect life.

Lizzie Pannill Fletcher: Reject hate, bigotry, and racism

In 2017, we saw the vision of a minority who want to return America to the Jim Crow era. We must not let this happen. We must choose to reject hate, bigotry, and racism. We must work for equality, justice, and freedom for all Americans. We saw that, too, in 2017: clergy, students, and citizens standing up to racist mobs, rejecting their ideas, and denouncing hate. We must continue to do so.

Lizzie Pannill Fletcher: Add sexual orientation, gender identity to Civil Rights Act

I support a federal Equality Act that would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and related statutes to ensure that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity is prohibited. Gay and transgender people--and their families--should have the same rights and protections as others in the workplace, in housing, in healthcare decisions, and in our communities. This will not be an easy fight.

Mikie Sherrill: Make it easier, not harder, to cast a ballot

I support campaign finance reform and measures that work to overturn Citizens United. Partisan redistricting has drawn ruby red and bright blue districts. This prevents us from finding common sense proposals that the majority of Americans support. Voting is the bedrock of our democracy, and we need to make it easier, not harder, for U.S. citizens to cast a ballot. Ways to do this would be to expand early voting, mail in ballots, or no-excuse absentee voting.

Dean Phillips: Restore faith in our democracy and increase participation

Dean believes Election Day should be a national holiday to afford more Americans the opportunity to exercise their right and responsibility to vote. He also supports electoral reforms--?including requiring states to establish independent, multi-party citizen redistricting commissions, and expanding same-day voter registration nationwide.

Haley Stevens: I will be a voice for LGBTQ+ equality under the law

I believe LGBTQ+ individuals should have the same rights as all other Americans. Michigan state law does not include full protections for people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. This means it is still legal to deny employment, housing, and medical treatment based on gender identity or sexual orientation. In Congress, I will support the LGBTQ+ community and be a voice for equality under the law.

Mike Levin: A strong ally in the fight for marriage equality

Mike will continue to be a strong ally in the fight for marriage equality and protection against discrimination until it is the law in all 50 states. Mike co-sponsored and voted for the Equality Act which passed the House last year and is an advocate for the equal treatment of LGBTQ couples who hope to adopt a foster child. Mike believes that no one should face discrimination or harassment based on their gender identity or sexual orientation.

TJ Cox: Supports comprehensive campaign finance reform

The Supreme Court's 2010 decision in Citizens United v. F.E.C. was one of the worst decisions in our country's history. Now, corporations, special interests, and billionaires can spend unlimited, untraceable money in America's elections. In Congress, he will fight to end Big Money in politics and fix our rigged political system by sponsoring and passing comprehensive campaign finance reform.

Debbie Mucarsel-Powell: We must be allies to LGBTQ community

SAVE [Safeguarding American Values for Everyone], the leading organization in South Florida dedicated to protecting people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) against discrimination, has endorsed Debbie Mucarsel-Powell for the 2018 election. "We applaud Debbie's commitment to greater inclusion and representation of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and other queer individuals at all levels of public life," said Tony Lima, executive director of SAVE.

Tom Malinowski: Full civil rights protections to LGBTQ Americans

Congressman Malinowski voted to pass H.R. 5, the Equality Act, which extends full federal civil rights protections to LGBTQ Americans. This bipartisan bill guarantees protections against anti-LGBTQ bias in employment, housing, credit, federal funding, and public accommodation. H.R. 5 affirms existing interpretations by federal courts and agencies. "Today in Congress we affirmed that no matter which state you may live in, you are entitled to equal rights under the law."

Deb Haaland: Justice, dignity and safety for all the marginalized

When too many are facing increasingly hateful violence--specifically in the black, brown, Native American, and LGBTQ communities-- I will fight for justice, dignity, and safety for marginalized communities. We must ensure that our policies reflect the inclusion and kindness we want to see in America. That means demilitarizing our nation's police forces, legalizing marijuana for adults over 21, ensuring that we support the DOJ in investigating and prosecuting hate crimes and police violence.

Dusty Johnson: Our Constitution is a pillar of American exceptionalism

Our Constitution is a pillar of American exceptionalism. It guarantees our people freedom of speech, freedom to practice a chosen faith, and the right to keep and bear arms. These guarantees, and others in the Constitution, make up the fabric of who we are as Americans. I will fight every day to ensure that our Constitutional rights are preserved.

Kevin Hern: Marriage is a sacrament between a man and a woman

Kevin also believes that marriage is a sacrament between one man and one woman. The sacrament of marriage has strengthened societies for many generations, and we must uphold the truth of marriage in order to better ourselves as a nation.

Lori Trahan: Close the pay gap: give women equal pay for equal work

Work to close the pay gap. It's no secret, women earn less than men across our economy--especially women of color. By placing an emphasis on pay transparency and preventing employers from asking prospective hires about their salary histories, we can help ensure that women are compensated equally for their work.

Ayanna Pressley: The LGBTQ community should be treated as equals

Ayanna has long supported the rights of the LGBTQ community to be treated fairly in partnership rights, in marriage and in equal treatment under the law. On the Boston City Council, she co-sponsored the Gender-based Discrimination and Hate Crimes bill, known as the Transgender Civil Rights Bill, co-sponsored a city ordinance that requires city health insurance to cover gender reassignment surgery, and held a hearing to examine the challenges facing LGBTQ youth of color in the city of Boston.
