Survey of 2018 House campaign websites: on Drugs

Haley Stevens: Tax and regulate marijuana to fund important projects

Studies have shown that full, federal legalization of medical marijuana in particular could be an effective solution to combat opioid addiction. I support descheduling marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act and pardoning and wiping the records of past offenders who were convicted of non-violent, marijuana-related crimes. We should begin taxing and regulating marijuana to fund important projects like our roads and our schools.

Haley Stevens: Drug prosecution targets people of color disproportionately

We must end the War on Drugs as we know it. Drug policy and prosecution targets people of color at a disproportionate rate. This form of injustice and inequality is unacceptable and it is not effectively solving the problem of ridding our communities of drugs and crime. We must reexamine how we approach drug policy with the purpose of supporting American families. We can come up with solutions to save lives and rebuild the communities that have suffered from addiction for far too long.

David Trone: We can't accept government's response to fight opioid crisis

We have the 10th highest rate of opioid overdose deaths in the nation. President Trump does not take this crisis seriously. He has proposed cutting the budget of the Office of National Drug Control Policy by 95%, refused to declare a national emergency to combat the crisis, and appointed a political advisor rather than a qualified expert to oversee the government's response. This approach is wrong and the consequences are deadly. The government can and must do more to combat this epidemic.

Lori Trahan: Substance abuse culture must change: promote rehabilitation

We need to change the culture around substance use and promote rehabilitation. Lori wants to empower communities to enact programs that teach adolescents about drug use and addiction across the state of Massachusetts. Lori believes we need to step up and provide more federal dollars to support prevention, treatment, and transitional programs. Destigmatize substance use disorder treatment. Prioritize rehabilitation and treatment over incarceration for low-level and nonviolent drug offenses.

Amy McGrath: Medical marijuana can help PTSD and addiction

Many veterans suffering from chronic pain and PTSD report improved healthcare outcomes from medical cannabis and I'm proud to stand with the American Legion in calling for the removal of cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug and permit its use to treat ailments that veterans, and others, face. It may also alleviate some of the dependence on opioids for pain relief and that, alone, is a meaningful reason to consider moving in that direction.
