Survey of 2018 House campaign websites: on Education

Kim Schrier: Children deserve access to an excellent public education

Our children all deserve access to an excellent public education, regardless of zip code. I will fight to provide resources needed in disadvantaged schools to level up the playing field. Advocating for early childhood education will be a cornerstone of my education policy.

Kim Schrier: Affordable higher education with no-interest loans, grants

For students who choose to pursue higher education, whether at trade schools or public universities, I will work to make it affordable, with no-interest loans and grants to students who need them.

Ben McAdams: Will work to provide equal opportunity to students

Ben believes education is the best investment we can make in children. He thinks every child should have the opportunity to achieve his or her potential -- regardless of zip code or economic circumstance. Ben will work to provide equal opportunity to students.

Ben McAdams: Supports access to financial aid for college students

Ben received federal student loans and Pell grants for college. He understands how important these programs are for families who are helping their children through college. He supports access to financial aid through the U.S. Department of Education and wants more transparency and lower overhead costs.

John Rose: Keep education local; reject Common Core

Keeping education as local an issue as possible makes sense. I believe the federal government has a role to play in education, but the Department of Education should not exist to pass down standards that are one size fits all. Instead, the federal government should be a resource for states as they craft policy that works for them. Here in Tennessee, we have rejected common core and I will fight to be sure such policies are kept out of our state.

Kendra Horn: Make college affordable; against voucher schemes

The cost of a college education shouldn't weigh students down for the rest of their lives. Kendra will work to reduce interest rates on student loans and make college more affordable. We should make it easier for families to save for their children's education free of taxes. In K-12, we need to measure progress, but we've taken testing to an extreme. Kendra opposes using tax dollars for vouchers or similar schemes.

Anthony Gonzalez: Protect schools by arming school officials & metal detectors

We should commit federal dollars to school districts that allow them to protect their schools in whatever way the local communities deems best. For some, that might be training and arming school officials. For others, that might mean hiring additional school resource officers or buying metal detectors. Whatever the method, Congress needs to provide our local communities with the funds necessary to protect our children from harm.

The right to bear arms is one of our Constitutional rights as citizens of this country. As such, we must constantly work to preserve this right for future generations. I firmly support the Second Amendment and will be a defender against those who seek to infringe upon it.

Anthony Gonzalez: More local control and choice in our education system

The biggest threat to the long-term economic strength of our nation is an education system that ranks middle of the pack amongst competitive advanced economies. We need an education system that is as dynamic and flexible as the economy that awaits our children in the 21st century. Providing more local control and choice in our education system is the first step towards a more effective education system.

Xochitl Torres Small: Invest in public schools, act on southern New Mexico needs

In southern New Mexico, we have some unique challenges in providing public education to our rural and diverse communities. I'll fight for increased funding for our public schools so that all students have access to the tools and technology they need. I'll work to increase funding for English language learning programs. I'll advocate for better pay for teachers, and I'll push to reduce class sizes. Finally, I'll invest in early childhood education and work toward universal access to Pre-K.

Sharice Davids: Every student should have access to quality public education

Every student should have access to quality public education, regardless of their ZIP Code, ability, or special needs. I support implementing a holistic approach to education, focusing on access to quality public options from pre-K through secondary higher education and promoting strong, skills-based training programs.

Sharice Davids: Make higher education more affordable

I'm committed to making higher education more affordable, so our kids aren't graduating with crushing debt. I'm working to implement policies that encourage and facilitate the opportunity for higher education. That's why I signed onto legislation to lower the cost of student loans and protect students from bad actors. We must also expose students to careers in trades and technical areas--skills that are vitally important to a robust economy.

Lauren Underwood: Higher education should not be a privilege

We should be making it easier for students to afford college by increasing our investment in higher education institutions. I support increased funding for Pell grants, increased availability of affordable subsidized student loans, and the continuance of the public service loan forgiveness program. Higher education should not be a privilege of a certain class of people.

Sean Casten: Chipping away at the public school system has consequences

Chipping away at the public school system has societal consequences. The government's role should be to make the public school system as good as it can possibly be. It should not be to grease the paths for the most wealthy or intelligent to exit the system. Current policy creates a race to the bottom, leaving the public schools with the hardest work and the fewest resources. We must recommit to providing universal and high-quality public education to all.

I actively oppose any policies that direct public schools to adopt anti-scientific curricula. Evolution should be taught in public schools. So, too, for climate change and other settled scientific concepts and principles. I support a reintroduction of civics into middle and high school curricula. We should require that all high school students graduate with a common understanding of U.S. history and civics.

Jason Crow: Fight funding cuts & voucher proposals

Young people should have access to high quality education, regardless of where they live or their ability to pay. I owe much of my success to strong, public, neighborhood schools. Every child deserves the same. Colorado's public school system has left too many children behind. In Congress, I am fighting against cuts in funding and voucher proposals that will only make this problem worse for Colorado's families.

Jason Crow: Ensure student loans are affordable

We must ensure that student loans are affordable, costs of higher education are reasonable, and that community colleges and technical training opportunities are available and reliable so that job training and re-training for tomorrow's economy is available to all Americans. I supported legislation to allow people to refinance and consolidate student loans, lower education costs, and provide loan forgiveness to those who work in public service careers.

Elaine Luria: Supports universal pre-K, school modernization

Every child deserves access to a world-class education. I'm proud to support universal pre-K to build a strong foundation for young students to thrive. This is not only an education issue it is an economic imperative for working and military families. I was proud to support the Rebuild America's Schools Act that provides direct federal spending for school modernizations, renovations, and repairs, with priority given to public schools in underserved communities.

Elaine Luria: Promoting alternatives to college, student loan forgiveness

As your Congresswoman, I'll continue promoting expansion of career and technical education because while college might not be for everyone, a path to the middle class must be. That's why I also support adequate student loan forgiveness so students who want to go to college can. No student should be deterred from seeking higher education because of the cost.

Michael Cloud: Provide parents greater choices for children

As the father of three children and the husband of a public school teacher, I understand our urgent need to provide a quality education for all of our nation's students. Our bureaucratic approach to education is failing our students. We need to free teachers to teach and provide parents greater input in educational choices for their children.

Lizzie Pannill Fletcher: We must invest in public education

We must invest in public education and work to ensure its success. Teachers need to be able to teach. We need programs designed to close the achievement gap. We need to end the school-to-prison pipeline. We need to make sure that all of our schools offer the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) curriculum that helps build the skills our students will need for the jobs of the future.

Lizzie Pannill Fletcher: We must find relief from crushing student debt

For the college-bound population, we must address the rising costs of tuition. For those who have graduated, we must find relief from crushing student debt. For-profit colleges must be held accountable for the false promises they made. Community colleges should be expanded, and access to technical and vocational programs should be encouraged.

Max Rose: National student debt is approaching a crisis

Max is committed to lowering the student debt burden. Our national student debt is approaching a crisis, and we must take bold action to ensure that students aren't saddled with debt their entire lives. Max opposes the federal government profiting off of providing student loans. He's focused on supporting vocational and technical education, which provide access to good-paying jobs that are essential to our national prosperity.

Mikie Sherrill: I will work to protect funding for our public schools

Access to quality education and support for our educators need to be top priorities, period. New Jersey has the second best public school system in the country. We proudly invest in our students and teachers. As the parent of four public school students, I will work to protect funding for our public schools.

Mikie Sherrill: Make college affordable for anyone willing to work for it

We need to make college more affordable so that it is within reach of any young person who's willing to work hard for it. Students should be able to borrow from the federal government at the same rate big banks do, and we should allow students to refinance their debt when interest rates go down. We also need to make it easier for students who want to complete their courses faster, so they can save on tuition and enter the workforce more quickly.

Dean Phillips: Ensure education & training after high school is affordable

Dean's Priority: Jobs and the Economy: Over two-thirds of 21st-century jobs will require education beyond high school, but not every student needs a four-year degree to earn a good living. That's why Dean will work to ensure that all types of education and training after high school--including college, apprenticeships and work-based learning--are affordable and accessible to Minnesotans of all ages. Angie Craig: Prioritize funding for public schools, students, teachers

I'll always prioritize funding for our public schools, students and teachers. One of my sons has learning challenges, and as his mother, I deeply understand the necessity of fully funding special education. I believe a quality education for every student is something we can all agree on. We also need to make sure our teachers are supported. Last year, I cosponsored the effort to double the amount educators are able to deduct for out-of-pocket expenses for their students and classrooms.

I support a pre-K through 14 public education system that would provide for the first two years of post-secondary education (technical education, earning an associate's degree or the first two years of a bachelor's degree). We need to increase Federal Pell Grants and invest in our two-year and community colleges. I helped introduce the Remedial Education Improvement Act, to create a grant program allowing federal student aid money to support up to two years of developmental education.

Haley Stevens: Increase Pell Grants; make college degrees less costly

I support proposals to make community college tuition-free through state based cost-sharing programs. I support using such programmatic dollars to increase the size of Pell Grants and make four-year college degrees significantly less costly. Finally, I stand by union run apprenticeship programs that link community colleges with employers and support employers who are directly looking to offer apprenticeship programs.

TJ Cox: Fund free community-college, vocational school, job training

TJ knows that investments in our public education system are the best investments our country can make. We must fund free community-college, vocational school, secondary school education and job training. TJ is proud to have funded effective community college facilities and programs in CA-21, including West Hills Community College's Farm of the Future.

Cindy Axne: All-day kindergarten for ALL kids, not just the lucky half

As a mother of two sons in public schools, Cindy understands the importance of a high-quality education. It's why she fought to pass all day public kindergarten in West Des Moines after finding out that West Des Moines' lottery system meant that half the children in the community were denied access to all day public kindergarten and got two and a half hours of education instead.

Cindy Axne: Invest in STEM in schools, then trade schools OR college

For America to continue to lead the way in the global economy it's time we reinvest in our public-schools. We must prepare our children to compete in a global market by promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs that enable students to graduate with the skills they need to be successful in today's workforce.

Preparing the next generation for good-paying jobs that support a family requires providing young people with affordable access to community college, apprenticeships, trade schools or four-year colleges. Cindy will fight for a greater investment in our community colleges and grow apprenticeship programs and trade schools so that every student has the opportunity to succeed. She will work to expand Pell Grants and cap the interest rates on student loans so that Wall Street banks aren't profiting by burdening young people with debt that will take them decades to repay.

David Trone: Recruit, train, and retain high quality teachers

We need to do more to recruit, train, and retain high quality teachers. The first step is recruiting talented people to become teachers. Let's create loan forgiveness programs for people who agree to become teachers and teach for 5 years. Next, we should ensure that teachers have appropriate training and support. I support inclusive education from preschool through 12th grade and beyond. Finally, we need to offer teachers competitive pay that's in line with comparable professions.

Deb Haaland: Calls for big, smart investments in public education now

Public education is the key to social mobility and economic security, and all our kids need access to good public schools. It's time for us to make big, smart investments in public schools and find real solutions that pull our kids and all New Mexicans out of poverty. Public schools are essential to ensuring American children can meet their full potential regardless of their income, Zip code, or skin color. We need big investments in public education now.

Lori Trahan: High quality public education is key to our economic future

Lori Trahan believes that high quality, public education is the key to unlocking our nation's true economic potential, a path towards creating new opportunities, and ensuring that the American Dream is still attainable for all. Lori will help to improve and offer support for improving our public schools and universities for students, teachers, and parents. Higher-education and student loans shouldn't be a barrier to achieving your dreams.

Ayanna Pressley: Debt free college should be available for all

In addition, our Federal representatives must work with states and local communities to incentivize greater investment in higher education--including community colleges--which will help drive down the cost of tuition. Ayanna believes that no student should be denied a college education because they can't taafford it--she will push for a debt-free college plan that allows students to attend public colleges and universities without being buried under student loans.
