Survey of 2018 House campaign websites: on Social Security

Anthony Gonzalez: Put entitlements on path towards sustainability

We need to put our social security and Medicare programs on a path towards sustainability so that they survive for generations to come. Both of these critical programs are set to implode by 2030 if we do not make them solvent. With the endless number of federal programs, our government is plagued by too many bad actors who fraudulently abuse the system at the expense of the American taxpayer. We need to more aggressively monitor and act against those who are taking advantage of the system.

Elaine Luria: Strengthen Medicare and Social Security

Every Senior that paid into Social Security and Medicare deserves the benefits they've earned. One of my top priorities is working to strengthen Medicare and Social Security. I've sponsored legislation to allow the government to negotiate with drug companies to keep our costs in check while providing seniors with the life-saving medicines they need. I've led the fight to protect Virginia's historic Medicaid expansion.

Veronica Escobar: Scrap the cap on payments into Social Security

I will protect and expand Social Security and Medicare benefits--and scrap the cap on what the rich pay into Social Security so the wealthy pay the same rate into the program as everyone else.

I see the impact of income inequality everyday and will fight to fix our broken economic system, while protecting the gains made by working families and fighting for tax reforms that support the families I represent.

John Joyce: No changes for those near retirement age

As a doctor and son from a middle class family, I know that seniors count on Medicare and Social Security. They've worked hard to build our great nation and we must keep our commitment to them. I do not support any bill or changes that would affect those near retirement age. I believe we need to protect Social Security and Medicare and make sure they are around for future generations.

Lizzie Pannill Fletcher: Oppose cutting, privatizing Social Security, Medicare

We have an absolute obligation to protect Social Security and Medicare. I will oppose efforts to privatize Social Security and Medicare, and I will oppose efforts to cut benefits for seniors or the disabled. To ensure the long-term viability of these programs we need to make government work more efficiently by cutting wasteful spending, fraud, and abuse, but not by cutting these programs.

Max Rose: Protect and expand Social Security

Max is working to ensure that Americans can retire with dignity by protecting and expanding Social Security and preventing Republicans from raising the retirement age. Max supports lowering the age of Medicare eligibility to 55 and working to stabilize pension plans. He's also focused on finding innovative ways to create and promote private retirement savings accounts for those who do not have access to retirement plans with their employer.

Mikie Sherrill: Oppose all efforts to privatize Social Security and Medicare

I will make sure that Social Security and Medicare are protected. I will oppose any budget that proposes cutting Social Security and Medicare to pay for the fiscally irresponsible tax plan and I'll also oppose all efforts to privatize Social Security and Medicare. These plans would benefit insurance companies and investment firms while cutting benefits for seniors.

Dean Phillips: Protect Social Security from being privatized or reduced

Dean's Priority: Retirement Security: Dean will fight to protect Social Security from being cut, privatized, or reduced for Minnesota seniors. He'll also work to ensure that Social Security benefits keep up with the rising costs faced by our parents, grandparents, and veterans. As a place to start, Dean is an advocate for a mechanism by which wealthier retirees may voluntarily redirect their benefits to lower-income retirees.

Angie Craig: Strengthen Social Security & Medicare; shore up funding

Medicare and Social Security allow Americans who have paid into these programs their entire lives to retire with dignity. That's why I oppose any changes that would cut, privatize or jeopardize these programs. I am determined to find ways to strengthen Social Security and Medicare. I am committed to eliminating waste, fraud and abuse of both programs, and shoring up their funding--even if it requires asking millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share.

Haley Stevens: Will fight any attempt to privatize or cut Social Security

I will fight any attempt to privatize or cut Social Security or turn Medicare into a voucher program. Instead, we must protect and expand Social Security benefits to keep up with the costs faced by our seniors, grandparents, and veterans. These are programs that seniors paid into their entire working lives, and we must keep our promise to them by ensuring these programs are protected now and for generations to come.

Mike Levin: Oppose any and all efforts to privatize Social Security

Mike believes that we must fight to preserve Medicare and Social Security, essential programs that reflect our shared commitment to support seniors, and that we must oppose any and all Republican efforts to privatize Social Security or raise the retirement age--an unfair idea that will hurt seniors who have worked the hardest. This is why Mike co-sponsored the Social Security Fairness Act and the Social Security 2100 Act, to protect and strengthen benefits for our seniors and future retirees.

TJ Cox: Will fight any attempt to privatize or cut

As a boy, TJ's father was tragically killed in a car accident but Social Security's Survivor Benefits for Children were there to help him and his family in their time of need. He is committed to protecting Medicare and Social Security so that seniors and families in the Central Valley receive the full benefits they have been promised. He will fight back against any attempt to privatize or cut these programs.

Tom Malinowski: Subject earnings above $400,000 to the payroll tax

Social Security is a service that we pay into for our entire working lives. It is Congress's responsibility to ensure that we receive the full benefits of Social Security when we retire.

I support the Social Security 2100 Act, which protects the program's longevity, and will actually expand benefits to millions of Americans. By subjecting earnings above $400,000 to the payroll tax, Social Security will remain solvent beyond 2100, while protecting Middle Class Americans from any tax increases.

Dan McCready: Protect Social Security and Medicare from privatization

[Dan McCready] knows the importance of preserving Social Security and Medicare for our middle class. We need common sense to protect our current seniors and ensure that those retiring in the years to come will also have a safety net. Dan will oppose any efforts by corporate special interests to turn Medicare into a risky voucher program and any efforts to turn Social Security over to the stock market and gamble seniors' retirement.

Cindy Axne: Will fight against social security privatization

Donald Trump and Paul Ryan's budgets try to cut Medicare and privatize it, threatening seniors who have worked hard and paid into these systems. Cindy will stop Trump and Ryan, honoring the promises we've made to seniors. As a volunteer for years with Friends of the Elderly, Cindy's seen up close how much our seniors depend on Social Security & Medicare. Cindy will fight Republican efforts to privatize and defund these programs so our seniors and families can live their lives with dignity.

David Trone: Social Security works but needs cap raised on taxable wages

Social Security is one of the most successful programs in American history. It's estimated that the program keeps 22 million Americans from living in poverty. The program will face challenges as our population continues to age. The number of workers per retiree is declining. If no action is taken, there will not be sufficient funds to pay out full Social Security by 2034. To fix the funding, we should increase the cap on taxable wages.

Colin Allred: Protect Social Security and Medicare from cuts

Congressman Sessions and his allies will have to cut Medicare and Social Security in order to pay for the tax giveaway to corporations and the wealthiest Americans -- breaking the promise made to our seniors. I will fight for middle class tax cuts--not handouts to those at the top. And while Pete Sessions has voted to raise the retirement age and cut Medicare benefits, I will protect them.

Deb Haaland: Increase Social Security by ending the cap on taxable income

In Congress I will fight for: To expand social security, by ending the cap on taxable income, so that more older Americans can retire with dignity. Current Social Security for many seniors is simply too low to meet basic needs like food, housing, and healthcare. Right now, only income up to $128,400 per year is taxable on social security, meaning our country's highest earners aren't paying their fair share.

Lori Trahan: Fight to keep Social Security uncut & safe for seniors

Trahan said families want a representative they know, someone who has a first-hand understanding of their issues, and one they can trust will fight for them. "Working class people are afraid--they are afraid their Social Security will be cut, they worry about being able to support their families, and they fear for their children's futures," said Trahan. "People want a government that works for them and they want a representative who shares their feelings, their experiences, and their story."

Amy McGrath: Expand Social Security to include teachers

"While I wish Kentucky would change its plan to allow teachers to receive both a pension from the state and also pay into the Social Security system--just like military retirees and other federal government retirees get to do-- that is a decision that rests with General Assembly and the governor."

Ayanna Pressley: Social Security is crucial and must not be cut

Republicans in Congress continue to look for new ways to undermine Social Security and Medicare, but we must be steadfast in our promise to older Americans who have paid into these essential programs their entire lives. Ayanna doesn't just oppose cutting Social Security and Medicare, she emphatically supports expanding these critical programs, because retirement security is more than a senior issue, it's a family concern.
