Survey of 2018 House campaign websites: on Tax Reform

Ben McAdams: Make tax system simpler, fairer, more predictable

Ben supports tax reform that makes the tax system simpler, fairer and more predictable. This way, families and businesses can plan for the future. He criticized the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act because it favored the wealthy over the middle class. In addition, it will add $1.5 trillion of federal debt over the next 10 years.

John Rose: Tax code too complicated; make it easier to file

Thanks to decades of new laws and regulations our tax code is too complicated. When tax time comes many average Americans cannot file on their own. That is unacceptable. I support and will vote for a fair, simple tax code that promotes economic growth and makes filing taxes easier on all Americans.

Kendra Horn: Recent tax cut "scam" was for millionaires & corporations

Government should live within its means, but it also needs to pay for core services. The most recent tax scam was written to protect millionaires and corporations, instead of the middle class. It also directly threatens Social Security and Medicare, which so many rely on. We should incentivize good corporate behavior. True tax reform should help everyone, not just shareholders and CEO's.

Elaine Luria: Introduced bill to reduce taxes on Gold Star families

As a veteran, I was appalled by the mistake in the 2017 Tax Bill that was causing some Gold Star families to pay thousands of dollars in additional taxes on their survivor benefits. So, I introduced legislation with bipartisan support to ensure those families received every cent they deserve.

John Joyce: Trump's historic tax reform has strengthened our economy

There is no doubt that President Trump's historic tax reform has strengthened our economy and allowed American taxpayers to keep more of their money. We need to continue our economic momentum by getting government spending under control, ending useless regulations, and doing a second round of tax relief for the American workers. We must make the individual tax relief permanent--so that taxpayers can have the same sort of predictability that we have afforded job creators.

Max Rose: Repeal cap on state and local tax deductions

For too long, Washington has let the wealthy and corporations shape our economy at the expense of the middle class. Unfortunately, this most recent tax bill has only made things worse, capping the State & Local Tax Deduction (SALT) and allowing the government to tax the same hard earned dollars twice. That is why Max is a co-sponsor of the SALT Deduction Fairness Act that would repeal this misguided policy that targets hard working New Yorkers.

Mikie Sherrill: Pass a tax plan that supports the middle class

Pass a tax plan that supports the middle class. We only receive 74 cents back for every $1 we send to Washington in federal taxes--less than any other state. We already do more than our fair share. The federal tax bill targets us even further, with NJ affected worse than any other state in the nation. I will fight to bring back our full deduction for state and local taxes.

Dean Phillips: Make middle class tax cuts permanent, end special giveaways

Elements of the recently passed tax bill were positive, including the reduction in the corporate tax rate to make U.S. businesses more competitive. Dean believes it's bad policy when approximately 83% of the benefits flow to the top 1% of earners. While cuts for those at the top are permanent, the cuts for the middle class expire. Dean supports making those tax cuts permanent and ending the special giveaways and sweetheart deals for wealthy special interests in the bill--and in the tax code.

David Trone: An equitable tax system means wealthy pay fair share

Trump's tax cuts will strangle our children and grandchildren with $1.9T in debt. It's fiscally irresponsible to be giving giant tax breaks to corporations that do not need them. We need to ensure that the wealthiest pay their fair share. I support the Buffett Rule that people making over 1 million a year should pay no less than 30% in taxes. I also support removing the carried interest loophole that allows hedge fund managers to pay lower tax rates on their profits than working Americans.

Kevin Hern: Wants simplified tax system, keep more money in your pockets

Kevin believes in a simplified tax system; that money earned should stay in the pockets of those who earned it. He is an advocate for reduced government regulation and spending. Kevin believes that the only route to repairing America's economy is to cut spending. With increased economic growth, we will see the necessary decrease in unemployment rates.

Lori Trahan: Bring equity back to tax code; close loopholes for wealthy

Restore basic equity to our tax code. Wealthy families shouldn't pay a lower tax rate than hardworking middle-class families. In Congress, Lori wants to close the loopholes that unfairly position middle-class families and don't allow them to take full advantage of the economy.

Troy Balderson: Road to good paying jobs is cutting taxes & keeping them low

Troy will continue to work for lower taxes that keep more money in the pockets of Ohio families and small businesses, and out of the hands of DC politicians so good-paying, American jobs are created here at home. Troy's leadership in the state legislature has helped Ohio do just that--500K new jobs have been created, helping unemployment across the state to under 5%, and he has voted to cut taxes for working families by $5 billion since he took office.

Ayanna Pressley: Our tax code should relieve the 99%

The Republican tax bill does nothing but worsen the existing wealth disparity--providing millions in tax breaks to the top 1% and corporations--while burdening the next generation with a trillion dollars in new debt. Instead, Congress should focus on simplifying our tax code in a manner that provides relief for lower- and middle-income families, not wealthy individuals and multinational corporations.

Debbie Lesko: I have never seen a tax I didn't want to cut

I have never seen a tax I didn't want to cut and have a proud record of voting for common sense tax reforms. The newly passed tax reform package from Congress doesn't go far enough. We need a reformed tax code that allows citizens to fill out their tax returns on a postcard. I will push for this tax simplification.
