Nate Boulton in 2018 IA Governor's race

On Immigration: No use of local enforcement during federal immigration raids

A hot topic [at the Democratic debate] was immigration, and if these candidates would support the use of local law enforcement during federal immigration raids. This comes after federal agents arrested 32 suspected undocumented immigrants at a business in Mount Pleasant last week.

"It's a problem with our federal immigration," Andy McGuire said. "To make laws where we would have a comprehensive policy."

"This past legislation session I was proud to stand up and speak against a bill that would have, and will federalize law enforcement," Nate Boulton said.

"That bill listed under public safety is a charade. All they are trying to do, the Republican legislature there, is divert attention from the very poor fiscal management they are doing for our state," Fred Hubbelll said.

"The governor should use the voice at the federal level that we have a path to citizenship that doesn't tear families apart," Cathy Glasson said.

On Civil Rights: Defended LGBTQ nonprofit Iowa Safe Schools

Under Republican leadership, Iowa has taken steps backwards regarding civil rights. Governor Reynolds has said that LGBTQ+ issues are a matter of local control, putting the rights of LGBTQ+ Iowans in danger.

Nate has consistently fought to protect Iowans' civil rights. When Iowa Safe Schools, an LGBTQ nonprofit advocacy group was attacked by legislators at the Capitol, Nate volunteered legal services and stood up to defend the organization as an attorney. As Governor, Nate would fight to ban conversion therapy and work to ensure that every child, no matter their sexual orientation, can go to school free from harassment and bullying.

Iowans should be proud of our state's legacy of advancing civil rights, and we should honor that legacy by continuing to advance the rights of all Iowans.

On Corporations: Tax credits & corporate giveaways have hurt economy

We need a long term plan to grow Iowa's economy for the next generation. The Branstad-Reynolds administration has lowered Iowa from an economy driven by a reliable and productive workforce into a coupon economy: using short-term planning and attracting low-paying, low-skilled jobs by being the lowest bidder. Nate will reevaluate the $600 million (and growing) in tax credits and giveaways that have ruined our state's budget and actually hurt our economy for the long term.

On Crime: Public safety & police can't be done on the cheap

Iowa's public servants, including police officers, firefighters and DHS field staff are the bedrock of building Iowa's safe and secure communities. Their funding has been cut, their rights to better wages and benefits rolled back, and even their very safety put at risk from reduced staffing levels. If we are going to have safe and secure communities we must once again give our public servants the resources they need to be successful.

On Education: State must fund public schools, not voucher schemes

Iowa can be a world-class leader in education if we prioritize consistent funding for education at all levels--from universal pre-K to higher education. Nate will champion education issues so that school districts can thrive instead of struggling to make ends meet and competing against each other for funds. Additionally, we must resist efforts that would take funds out of our public schools to support private and home school voucher or savings account schemes.

On Education: Supports teacher's unions to attract best teachers

Republicans gutted teachers' rights to bargain for better base wages, earn raises, and receive the benefits they deserve for serving as leaders in building the future for our local communities. Nate will ensure Iowa values the profession of teaching by fighting to restore teachers' rights and ensure we have the best and brightest teaching our children.

On Energy & Oil: 50% renewable energy by 2025

Nate will invest in renewable resources. He has committed to creating 50% of Iowa's energy from renewable energy by 2025. As Senator, he has sponsored legislation to ensure Iowa remains a solar energy leader. By building wind turbines and solar panels in Iowa and continuing research into new technologies, our state can continue to be a leader in renewable fuels and energy production while also creating skilled jobs expansion for our state.

On Environment: Funding water trust fund improves safety & tourism

Nate will work with the legislature to fully fund the land and water trust fund that Iowans approved by an overwhelming majority at the ballot box in 2011. Funding the trust would create a sustainable funding source to begin cleaning up Iowa's waterways through buffer zones and other conservation practices. These efforts would not only lead to safer drinking water, but increase wildlife habitat and expand natural resource tourism in our state. Increasing recreational opportunities for hunting, fishing, hiking, and biking can be a major part of expanding tourism and promoting a better quality of life for Iowans.

On Health Care: Focus on vulnerable people rather than corporate profits

Nate would reinstate a state-run managed system that prioritizes Iowa's most vulnerable, instead of corporate profits. The Branstad-Reynolds administration has failed Iowans and providers alike by handing over the care of 1 in 6 Iowans to a few private managed care companies, who now must be bailed out with taxpayer money to make a profit.

On Jobs: $15 minimum wage indexed to inflation

Nate would fight for a minimum wage of $15 an hour, indexed to inflation, to keep up with our growing economy. Rather than lagging behind five of our six neighboring states, Iowa must become a leader on developing a stronger workforce and creating a livable wage. Nate wants a $15 minimum wage by 2024 and an immediate increase to $10.75 by 2019.

On Technology: Invest in rural infrastructure, including for tourism

Boulton said rural areas need greater infrastructure investment, and in an interview, he cited the Vision Iowa program as a model. The program offered grants and loans for local tourism-related initiatives in the early 2000s. "I think a program like that would be worth exploring again," he said.

On Abortion: Anti-abortion law hurts women's healthcare access

[On defunding Planned Parenthood]: "Our debate affects real Iowans who are receiving real services today. Our focus needs to be on those Iowans and our responsibility to them," said Boulton. "What we are doing here is harming a working system based on old political battle lines and Iowa women are going to receive less access to health care as a result."
