2018 MI Governor's race: on Principles & Values

Bill Schuette: Served 3 terms in Congress & then as state Attorney General

In 1984, at the age of 31, Schuette won his first election to the U.S. House. He served three terms before losing a 1990 run against Democratic U.S. Sen. Carl Levin of Detroit. In 2010, Schuette sought higher office and was elected attorney general. He hasn't shied away from highly visible and controversial cases, such as joining other state attorneys general in opposing rules and policies of the Democratic Obama administration.

Jennifer Granholm: Embrace diversity: that is American exceptionalism

Politics is all about addition. Democrats, we have a big tent, as people keep saying, and that means that we want to be about the word "all," right? So we want to embrace the notion of the Statue of Liberty--we want to say that whether you were brought here, your people were brought here on the Amistad, or your people crossed the border via Arizona, or whether they came here on American Airlines, we want to embrace the diversity. That is American exceptionalism.

Gretchen Whitmer: A better Michigan is worth fighting for, we can't wait

I'm no stranger to fights. As Ingham County Prosecutor and as Democratic leader in the Senate, I've led a lot of tough ones. Fights to protect workers' rights, fights to level the playing field for everyone, fights to protect kids and to hold government accountable. The fight was always worth it for what it said to the people we were fighting for. That's why I know we can build a Michigan with opportunities that rival those from our past. We can do better. We deserve better. And we can't wait.

Jennifer Granholm: There are political solutions to moral problems

There's nothing partisan about Pope Francis's statements. Time and time again, he's simply noted that there are political solutions to moral problems -- and that failing to reach these solutions is a moral failure, not just a political one. I know I just said that he isn't a partisan. But, candidly, I am. And I can't help but note--as a proud Democrat as well as a proud Catholic--that these days Democrats are the party more interested in reaching real solutions to these global challenges.
