Jensen Bohren in 2018 MS Senate race

On Gun Control: Moratorium on studying gun violence must be lifted

On the issue of gun control, Bohren's stance is a bit more controversial for progressives and the Democratic Party. Although Bohren supports the Second Amendment, he is in favor of extensively researching gun violence. "We need to lift the˙moratorium on studying the underlying causes of gun violence. We haven't studied the fundamentals of the issue since the mid-nineties. To avoid researching an issue due to political implications is stunningly irresponsible."

On Corporations: Small businesses need same subsidy that big businesses get

I believe that small businesses, the heart and souls of our towns' economy, should have the same governmental subsidy that all businesses currently enjoy at the 7.25 minimum wage. The large corporations can afford to pay a living wage without becoming unprofitable. Small businesses cannot. With the minimum wage increase, I believe that 60% of employees' wages should be supplemented as an encouragement to our small businesses' hiring practices.

On Corporations: Wall Street needs regulations to stop manipulating prices

In addition to disrupting monopolies, we must re-regulate Wall Street to protect the general public and avoid severe recession and, God forbid, any depressions. Also, to discourage dishonest inflation of stock prices, there should be a small tax, comparable in rate to one of the higher sales taxes, on re-buys of a company's own stock. These stock rebuys are a major component of our stock market and allow a company to manipulate the price of its stock.

On Crime: Reformed felons need their voting rights reinstated

We also need to re-examine the procedure of permanently removing the voting rights of freed, reformed felons to vote. After their time and parole have been served faithfully, returning their civil rights should be a standard approach. Making it difficult to regain their ability to participate in the running of their country disproportionately affects minority views in a way similar to Gerrymandering.

On Crime: Private prisons being encouraged to fill up to capacity

The second issue that I feel strongly about is Private Prison Reform. Currently, the issue is that the Private Prison lobby is encouraging as many prisoners as possible, as for each individual imprisoned they gain income. At the very least, 'full capacity' should be disincentivized, perhaps with a lump sum that does not depend upon total prisoner population.

On Drugs: Marijuana should be treated like alcohol and tobacco

In addition to Prison Reform, we need national Marijuana legalization. Marijuana needs to be removed from the drug scheduling and regulated like alcohol or tobacco. There are too many people getting into legal trouble that damages their future due to small amounts of marijuana, and the states are missing an enormous tax revenue with the black market sales of cannabis.

On Energy & Oil: Total shift to green energy sources and transportation

I also believe that encouraging green energy sources, green transportation, and green business practices will greatly benefit our economy in the long run. In addition to shifting to green energy production, our utility providers should be encouraged to become co-ops instead of companies. Sharing in the benefits of your own energy production or conservation should be encouraged and will prevent price gouging in utility bills. This will also set the foundations of a solar-powered grid.

On Government Reform: Prohibit all campaign donations from corporations

Corporations should not be able to donate money to a campaign, and any donations must be limited to the legal maximum limit of $2,700 without exception.

On Health Care: Cut out middleman and use the taxes for Medicare-For-All

I am for Medicare-For-All. With the current system, tax dollars go to a for-profit company, then to the healthcare providers. It makes sense that cutting out the middleman would save money, and we currently have people working on the Affordable Care Act who could transition to administering the newly created load for Medicare. I know this is a complex process, but thankfully there are people who are better versed on the issue than I. I would be a reliable vote for Medicare-For-All.

On Technology: Net Neutrality is fair to all, keeps manipulators at bay

The internet should not have sectioned gatekeeping, or fast lanes. This is known as "Net Neutrality," and it keeps companies from manipulating the data-rates given to their customers based upon the websites visited, and from breaking down portions of the internet. The internet has become critical to us as a society. I believe that as part of our infrastructure overhaul, we need high speed internet infrastructure, just like repairing our bridges, roads, and utility lines.

On Abortion: Women should have same body autonomy as men

It is astounding that, even in this day and age, women do not enjoy the same respect, pay rate, or body autonomy of men. As the oft-repeated refrain states, "Women's rights are human rights."

On Education: Put the focus on educating the students, not on profits

Many schools are being run like a business. Schools focused on profits over education don't adequately serve their students. We need to focus on generating educated GRADUATES, not generating profits.

On Homeland Security: Our vets don't deserve the treatment they have received

Veteran care is a cost of war, and should be factored into our military budget. No Vet should go hungry, no Vet should go homeless, and Vets should never suicide. We must support our Veterans.

On Principles & Values: Protect our inalienable rights

My personal values are American values. The founding document of our government stated that we have the inalienable rights of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. Let's ensure those rights.

On Tax Reform: Elect those who actually represent us, not themselves

"Taxation WITHOUT REPRESENTATION is Theft." We have to elect representatives, not profit seekers out for themselves.

On Welfare & Poverty: Paycheck to paycheck is an abominable way to exist

With attention to the general economic health of the nation, there should be no one living in poverty, and few living slightly above it. Paycheck-to-paycheck is an awful way to live. We can aim higher.
