Andrew Cuomo: Protect women's right to choose if Roe is overturned

New York lawmakers have passed one of the nation's strongest protections for abortion rights, saying the women of New York need legal safeguards if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. The Democrat-led Senate and Assembly passed the bill on the 46th anniversary of the Roe decision. Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo was expected to quickly sign it into law.

The bill was first introduced back in 2007 and removes abortion from the state criminal code and ensures women the right to an abortion in New York should that federal right ever be changed by the Supreme Court. For years, the law would pass the Assembly but fail in the Republican-controlled Senate. That all changed last fall when voters put Democrats firmly in charge in Albany.

"I support this act. It's crucial that we protect a woman's right to choose, particularly at this moment in history, when women's rights are under attack," NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

Marc Molinaro: Accepts abortion as law; but believes in preserving life

On abortion rights Molinaro said he believes in "preserving life," "but I accept that there are certain situations where individuals need to be able to make that decision, but I also accept that this is settled law in the state." "I'd like us to work as a society, as a community, to reduce the times that abortion is chosen," he added. "I acknowledge that as a society we need to do our best to help people make as many responsible decisions as possible.

Cynthia Nixon: Abortion is a fundamental right for all women

Women must have the right to determine whether and when to have children. That is what reproductive rights are all about. Abortion is a deeply personal and sometimes complex decision for a woman, and no one can make that decision for her. Decisions about whether to choose adoption, end a pregnancy or raise a child must be left to the woman and her family to determine based on their faith with the counsel of their medical provider. The fundamental right to abortion must be here to stay.
