On Environment: We need 100% world consensus or EPA is a wasteful burden

If we're the only country burdening its citizens with burdensome regulations then the world is only minutely changed. We need the entire planet to participate in maintaining our environment. Until we have consensus on this, our efforts are wasted. This planet has survived billions of years so far, and I believe God is not about to let man destroy it in a year or two. I agree it would be nice if our children and grandchildren had better air to breathe, and clean water.

On Health Care: ObamaCare drastically increased insurance rates

We simply must pass a repeal and reform of the ACA this year. The parties in Congress must both give a little as this legislation must take place! The ACA has drastically INCREASED rates for insurance coverage across the country. We can more carefully construct our Medicaid increases to allow for those in need to be covered without harming our economy. There are politicians who say people will die if we change the ACA. This is a false narrative and hyperbole.

On Homeland Security: 20 Vets commit suicide every day--we must do better by them

Our veterans deserve better. We're still trying to fix the VA system which has harmed so many of our veterans over the past 8 years and more. We cannot give less than average service to those who risked their lives to serve their country. This is simply ridiculous! We need to underscore the sense of urgency to fix the entire Veterans Administration--from top to bottom. We have 20 vets committing suicide every day. It's time we take action to protect our veterans.

On Immigration: Pathway to citizenship needed for law abiding immigrants

We are a country of immigrants. But we are also a nation with the rule of law. We should welcome immigrants with open arms, but immigrants should be legally here. We do have to ensure the safety of our citizens first. There are many immigrants who are here illegally but are otherwise leading crime-free lives, raising their families, paying taxes, and sending their kids to college. Our immigration policy to give these people a path to citizenship should be reformed.

On Jobs: Increasing minimum wage will result in less jobs

Those who study economics know that setting a high minimum wage increase at $15 is dangerous. I have spoken out against for 2 years now. Look at what has happened in Seattle when they went all in with the increase. All of a sudden there was a staggering loss in jobs, which is what economists have predicted all along. If you have 10 employees making $7.50/hour, and you raise their pay to $15/hour, 5 people will lose their jobs. Employers are not prepared to have their profit margins cut.

On Social Security: Maximum limit for pay into social security needs increase

The Social Security trust fund is under-funded. We have a maximum pay from which social security tax is deducted set around $120,000 per year with small yearly increases. This alone, if removed or increased, would better fund our Social Security program. Also, we have the capability to rein in Social Security benefit fraud. It's time we started plugging the leaks in our system before we look at pouring more into it.

On Tax Reform: Keep tax rate higher on wealthy for now, & slowly lower it

I support the spirit of the President's tax reform, but the details concern me. For instance, why cut taxes for the wealthy? Keep them at 39% and continue using the additional revenue to help with your budget. The wealthy have had years under President Obama to become accustomed to the tax burden. We can slowly decrease their tax rate as the benefits of lower taxes bring up the lower and middle tax bracket groups. Also, we should employ language that will close loopholes used by billionaires.

On War & Peace: Need diplomatic dialogue to keep Middle East under control

North Korea right now is our number one threat. Russia-Iran-Syria-ISIS are in a dogfight for 2nd, since they are so intertwined in the Middle East. The ramping up on sanctions from the US and China don't seem to be slowing down the Communists in North Korea, but the long term effects have to take their toll. Military force is a last resort. We must reopen strong diplomatic dialogue with Russia. That is the only way to keep the Middle Eastern conflict under control.

On Welfare & Poverty: False unemployment rate means rise in welfare & food stamps

The low unemployment rate is not a true rate, as people who have stopped looking for work for more than 4 weeks are not factored in. Upwards of 10 million people fall in this category! They are unaccounted for, as they are the long term unemployed. This is part of what explains why welfare and food stamp recipients are at record levels. Wages are flat, with no change in wages adjusted for inflation for over 25 years.
