On Crime: Arguments against death penalty are false

The bottom line remains the cost argument is a red herring to abolish the death penalty. Even if the expense of capital punishment was prohibitive, states could choose to reduce the number of capital cases pursued, or increase the legal threshold of pursuit, without eliminating it thus reserving the option to pursue capital punishment in heinous cases.

On Education: Supports options besides public schools

We all benefit from school choice. Students, parents, teachers and taxpayers benefit from competition. Traditional school representatives have emphasized they are not afraid to compete and that is good. But lowering the standard of what we deem acceptable is not the answer. Taxpayers refuse to continue funding a system that produces marginal output at great cost, especially when more effective alternatives are available.

On Energy & Oil: EPA's tyranny hurts coal jobs

The EPA regulations have struck a major blow to all coal companies. We have worked hard to enhance the air quality in the region and it has improved exponentially. The new EPA regulations however, won't result in a measurable difference in air quality. This creates a reality in which the EPA is forcing Americans out of work with nothing to show in return. It's agenda is inconsistent with that of the people and its time we stand up to the tyranny of the EPA.

On Gun Control: Backed by the NRA

Rick has once again been rated A+ by the National Rifle Association. "Members should interpret the A+ rating as meaning that Rick Saccone is a solid pro-gun/pro hunting candidate who is an advocate for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms."

On Gun Control: Don't ban guns for no-fly list; too many false positives

Legislation proposed both at the state and federal levels would deny those on the terrorist no-fly list from purchasing a gun. At first blush, it might sound like common sense that if you are too dangerous to board an airplane, you must be too dangerous to own a firearm, but deeper analysis reveals a multitude of problems with the idea.

One of the main weaknesses is that the system produces many false positives. Thousands of innocent people have been unfairly or mistakenly placed on the no-fly list. For example, Jet Blue removed an 18-month-old child from a flight minutes before takeoff because the toddler was erroneously added. How's that "common sense"?

Another problem: The criteria determining who is added to the list is a secret, and the little we know about it is troubling. Also, there is no notification process. You wouldn't know you were on the no-fly the list until preparing to board an airplane.

On Foreign Policy: Don't trust UN vetting: pause all Syrian refugees

I have seen editorials comparing a pause in Syrian refugee settlement to desecration of the Statue of Liberty's inscription that reads "huddled masses yearning to breathe free." The present situation is much different. Peppered among the so-called "huddled masses" of Syrian refugees "yearning to be free" are radicalized jihadists yearning to kill us.

Some say we should not react in fear, and that by slowing down the refugee program the terrorists win. Wrong again! A pause is not a reaction of fear but a calculated response designed to ensure the safety of Americans from terrorists.

Some say the United Nations already employs a vigorous 18-24 month vetting process for refugees, including biometric data and detailed face-to-face interviews. That process can be effective where the refugees are sincere & their plight is authentic. But we now have a stated & demonstrated threat of subverting the process by radical jihadist ISIS members infiltrating the stream of genuine refugees.

On War & Peace: Establish foothold diplomatic presence in North Korea

Kim Jong-un's release of three Americans imprisoned for "proselytizing" and "unruly behavior." Why did North Korea negotiate these releases, and what do they mean for its broader relations with the United States? I'm afraid the Obama Administration is so blind to North Korean culture that it is missing the signals and symbolism coming from this puzzling nation and its regime.

Because we refuse to recognize diplomatic relations with North Korea, America has almost no official contact. Our officials are reduced to guessing what North Korean intentions are based on partial conversations mediated through third parties.

We lack what we had during the former "Agreed Framework" under the Clinton Administration, which gave us a presence inside the country to aid in understanding it. The Obama Administration needs to offer some type of foothold presence inside the country to build foundational relationships.

On Energy & Oil: No extraction tax on the Marcellus Shale gas

There is a renewed effort by "tax-everything" proponents and their ilk to offer an extraction tax on the Marcellus Shale gas industry as a panacea to the budget shortfall we are experiencing in Pennsylvania. Fortunately for the economic future of Pennsylvania, cooler heads have so far prevailed.

The extraction tax is one of the most demagogued and misunderstood issues facing the Legislature today. Most citizens don't realize the industry is already taxed in the form of an impact fee. That fee generates over $200 million in revenue each year and growing. Additionally, the industry paid $1.4 billion in state taxes and fees in fiscal year 2012.

Though some people think additional taxation makes sense, it actually would be a job-killing economic policy. Proponents cling to it because it is their default solution for just about every revenue shortfall. Citizens are deluged with misinformation ignoring how much this industry contributes to the economy.
