2018 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Families & Children

Jeff Colyer: Safe and professional workplace, free from sexual harassment

I expect a safe and professional workplace--free from sexual harassment. To anyone here that has experienced these evils, I want you to know that you've been heard. You have value and you have my respect. Harassment in any form, at any time, in any place, will not be tolerated in my Administration.

I signed my first Executive Order which first requires all Cabinet Agencies to update their sexual harassment prevention policies. Every employee, every intern, every contractor shall receive the material.

Second, it requires every state employee, every manager, even every intern to undergo sexual harassment prevention training. This will happen annually.

Third, allegations of sexual harassment will be investigated promptly and appropriate disciplinary action shall be taken swiftly.

Jeff Colyer: More child welfare staff; more family programs

One need only pick up a newspaper to see examples of the extreme evil that exists in this world. Unfortunately, government will never be capable of preventing all these evils. But, we can and we must do better. To give children and families around the state the help they need, [we need a] top-to-bottom review of our state's child welfare system. We need funding to achieve the following goals:I know for a fact that each and every person in this room cares deeply about the plight of abused children in our state. Please join me as we fight for the most vulnerable children in our state.

Bruce Rauner: Combat sexual harassment among government employees

Today, I will sign an executive order to strengthen the policies that ensure all government employees under my office's jurisdiction have reliable and responsive outlets for reporting acts of sexual misconduct. The order makes the Ethics Act supreme over all other laws and agreements in the state, even those in collective bargaining agreements. Further, we will introduce legislation this session to make the Ethics Act the prevailing law of the state in all matters involving misconduct.

Phil Murphy: We all can contribute, including the differently abled

We must immediately resist Washington's all-out assault on New Jersey. This is not as much a battle between Democrats and Republicans, but a battle between right and wrong--between standing up for the people of New Jersey or standing for failed Washington politics.

We will resist every move from President Trump and a misguided Congressional leadership that would worsen income inequality; or divide families or deny access to college for our Dreamers; or defund essential infrastructure; or gut health care for our children, seniors, and the working poor.

A stronger and fairer New Jersey is rooted in an economy that creates better jobs and provides higher wages ... that creates places where industries can grow and communities can rise, where innovative companies are born and where millennials want to live and where seniors want to retire ... and, which remembers that we all have value and we all can contribute, including, and especially, the differently abled.

Kim Reynolds: Sexual harassment has been a stain on our culture

I want to talk about something that has captured the attention of the entire nation. Throughout history, sexual harassment has been a stain on our culture, a destructive force--in politics, media and entertainment, in workplaces large and small--in all facets of life. And it must stop.

I commend the number of women who have found the courage to speak out. As a woman, a mother of three girls, a grandmother, wife, sister, and daughter, I understand we're at an unprecedented moment in time.

I also understand that this is not a partisan issue. It can't be fixed by legislation or rule-making alone. You cannot legislate kindness or respect or morality. They must be taught. And that means the solution starts with every individual, man or woman. It's about showing respect to others. It's about character and decency. And it's about changing the culture once and for all.
