Bob Corker in 2018 TN Senate race

On Budget & Economy: Adding $2T to deficit was fiscally irresponsible

Corker lamented that his recent vote for the GOP tax bill could be one of the worst of his career if projections that it will add nearly $2 trillion to the deficit prove to be accurate. "None of us have covered ourselves in glory," Corker, who is retiring at the end of the year, said. "This likely will go down as one of the most fiscally irresponsible administrations and Congresses that we've had."

Corker was referring to a recent report by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, which concluded that the vote to increase the discretionary spending caps in the recent $1.4 trillion spending package, if made permanent, would add $2 trillion to the national debt.

Corker voted against the spending bill, calling it "one of the most grotesque pieces of legislation I can remember." But in December, he voted in favor of the Republican tax reform bill after voting against an earlier version, complaining that the legislation did not do enough to address the national deficit.

On Foreign Policy: Russia a bad actor, not moral equivalent to US

Q: Your views on Russia?

Corker: I do not see Russia as a friend of the United States in any form or fashion. Are there some things that we might be able to work together on? Sure. We certainly haven't seen evidence of their desire to fight terrorism with us. I mean, we see them kill civilians, and you know, help [Syrian President Bashar] Assad concentrate more fully his power.

Q: Trump said that he couldn't agree with criticism of Putin and that it was in effect hypocritical because we're killers too, here in America. Is that something that you agree with?

Corker: I see no moral equivalence between the United States and Russia. So look, they've got grievances. But I don't see the moral equivalency at all, and so I would strongly disagree with that.

On Free Trade: Supports free trade, but anomalies need to be addressed

We have 4.5% of the world's population in America. We've got 22% of the world's economic output. If we want the standard of living for Americans to continue to grow we've got to do business with people around the world. Are there some anomalies that exist? We recruited a lot of car manufacturing to our state. In some cases we're competing directly with Mexico for lots of reasons, whether it's a tariff reason or a labor reason. There's no question that our state's resources have been spent in incentive agreements and other things to overcome those things. So, there is a little bit of a something there that needs to be addressed.

On War & Peace: Countries must pony up for NATO; alliance is important

With NATO, there is an issue there. And we have countries that we've had a relationship with for a long time that are not contributing the amount that they're supposed to contribute to NATO. Madeleine Albright has been before our committee complaining about it. I complain about it every year. And finally, there's a president that's making a big deal out of that. I actually think that's a healthy thing, as long as we continue to understand the strong importance of the NATO alliance, and what it means to our own security. What it means to the world's security.
