2018 TX Governor's race: on Homeland Security

Lupe Valdez: Wants all veterans to receive the benefits they have earned

As a former US Army National Guard Captain, I have seen too many veterans who have served our country heroically return home with a lack of access to healthcare, sustainable housing and reintegration services. This is unacceptable, we can and must do more to treat our veterans with the dignity and respect they have earned.

Andrew White: Help first responders with citizen-led response teams

I'm against not preparing for something we know will happen. "You can borrow my boat" worked for Harvey, but it's not a strategy we should rely on.˙I'll organize a statewide effort to create citizen-led, neighborhood response teams that can assist 1st responders in the event of a major natural catastrophe/terrorist event.˙These teams will catalog their skill sets. They'll organize a leader, agree on a communications plan, perform annual training exercises and coordinate with local officials.˙

Lupe Valdez: Worked for Dept. of Homeland Security & then elected sheriff

After attaining the rank of captain in the U.S. Army, Valdez went on to work as a federal agent˙for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and, later, the Department of Homeland Security, focusing on˙fraud and drug cases for almost 30 years before being elected sheriff of Dallas County, the state's second most populous county.˙
