Danny Drew in 2018 UT Senate race

On Foreign Policy: Utah and US and her people are exceptional

His thought process is simple: Just as the United States is exceptional in the world, Utah and her people are exceptional in the United States. They deserve a Senator who will represent their best interests who is:

On Government Reform: Utah needs someone who is not beholden to PACs

On Civil Rights: Supported gay marriage from a young age

As a 12-year-old, [Danny Drew] had done a whole lot of soul-searching, prayer and research on gay marriage. So back in 1991, fully 26 years before Obergefell v. Hodges changed the American landscape in legalizing same-sex marriage nationally, that 12-year-old decided that he favored it. He did so as a member of a religion whose leaders, regarded as prophets, have until only recently preached in that capacity to oppose gay marriage politically.

On Education: Public schools should meet unique needs of disabled kids

Drew explained that a DeVos-funded PACs emptied their pockets to support a voucher program in Utah. [Former Governor Jon] Huntsman then had no problem in 2007 signing into law in the Parent Choice in Education Act, which was overturned by voters.

Drew's son needed unique schooling opportunities, but private schools were not affordable. Drew was upset when DeVos, in her Senate confirmation hearings, didn't know what the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was.

On Gun Control: Ridiculous to have guns at school in case of bears

Drew also scoffed at [Trump's Secretary of Education nominee] DeVos' argument that teachers need guns to defend classrooms from grizzly bears. "This is what you get in someone who has given millions of dollars to one party," he said. The DeVos family has given an estimated $200 million to the Republican party.

On Welfare & Poverty: All of society should help the least of us meet basic needs

"If you can meet basic needs--not handouts, but basic needs--I really believe that's the way a society should be and I guess that's why I'm an educator," Drew said. "We should be doing everything we can to help all of society. It's about when we help the least of these--a homeless person get a place to stay, a job."

Drew said he has also been bullied as an adult for his political beliefs--people with whom he has attended church have him "immoral" for being a teacher.

On Abortion: Common ground on reducing the number of abortions

I think the rational thing is that everybody wants to lower abortions. Both pro-life and pro-choice. I think the difference is asking, "What are you gonna do about it?" Pro-life is like "I don't believe in contraceptives; I don't believe in making sure we have to stop it or increase adoptions." I think there's common ground.

On Health Care: Replacements for ObamaCare should be non-partisan

One of the biggest talking points during the 2009 debate over the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) was that it wasn't bi-partisan. Yes the provisions were added in committee in a bi-partisan way but that no Republican would or did vote for it.

Now, Senator Hatch has joined a group of 15 republicans who are secretly creating a plan for the US Senate. Not only bypassing the appropriate Committees but ensuring that this bill will also be completely partisan.

On Government Reform: Big campaign donations are the tip of the iceberg

PhRMA donated $172,000 to the Utah Families Foundation, which is founded in part by Orrin Hatch. Nothing to see here?

"This is the tip of a very large iceberg," said Danny Drew, a school administrator from Utah who is building up a war chest to battle the Goliath of incumbents: Orrin Hatch.

On Education: School choice means re-segregation in some states

In Utah, school choice means strengthening our public education options; in some areas of the country, it can serve as a means of re-segregation public institutions. Historically Black colleges were indeed founded as a work around against restrictive Jim-Crow laws. Lack of equal opportunity is still a sad fact in much of our great nation. pushing a nationwide school choice initiative takes away our local control. Secretary Devos' plan will result in a tiered system of various levels that will result in an inequity for our children.

On Education: Local school choice, free from corporate influence

As Utahns we should instead fight to preserve our meritocracy by showing a commitment to all children, and work to develop solutions that strengthen public education. This is why I support giving local municipalities the control to select educational options appropriate for their children, free from corporate influence. In Utah, that solution should include more flexibility of choice; in other areas their solutions should be locally appropriate.
