Mitt Romney in 2018 UT Senate race

On Social Security: Bipartisan effort with Mitt Romney to shore up entitlements

Two Utah politicians, Sen. Mitt Romney and Rep. Ben McAdams, are part of a bipartisan effort to keep Social Security and Medicare from running out of money. McAdams said millions of people depend on the benefits they've earned through a lifetime of hard work. "We owe it to them and to future generations to carefully consider the options that will protect and strengthen these vital programs. Republicans and Democrats must keep the promises we've made about aging with dignity in our country," he said.

"It's irresponsible for Congress to keep ignoring a preventable crisis," Romney said. "We must put in place a responsible process now to prevent dramatic cuts to programs like Social Security and Medicare or be forced to enact massive tax hikes down the road, both of which would be devastating to middle class Americans."

On War & Peace: Abandonment of Kurds a "bloodstain" on American history

The House overwhelmingly approved a resolution disapproving of the president's abrupt decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria due to the Turkish invasion. The vote was 354-60.

Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney blasted Trump for abandoning the Kurds, denouncing the abandonment of an ally as "a bloodstain in the annals of American history."

On Gun Control: Prevent school shootings with state and local action

Romney called the school shooting [at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018, in which 17 people were killed] "senseless, debased evil."

"We must take action to prevent this again," he said, adding that this would best be accomplished at the state and local levels, not in Washington.

On Immigration: Welcome legal immigrants, instead of message of exclusion

Much of Romney's Senate announcement video focused on Utah values versus the Washington culture. "Utah has a lot to teach the politicians in Washington," he said. "... Utah welcomes legal immigrants from around the world. Washington sends immigrants a message of exclusion. And on Utah's Capitol Hill, people treat one another with respect."

Trump has called for building a wall on the country's border with Mexico and limiting legal migration.

Romney said he thought Trump had the right idea about the Dream Act, which lets children of immigrants born in the United States remain in the country. "We have to recognize that we as a nation will honor the commitment made by a prior president. So I agree with the president (Trump). Let's find a way to have these people be able to stay in our country."

Romney also said he supported Trump's so-called four pillars of immigration and favored stronger border security and stopping chain migration and the lottery program.

On Principles & Values: Bring Utah's values and Utah's lessons to Washington

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, announced on Friday he would run for a U.S. Senate seat in Utah, confirming months of speculation about a return to national politics.

"I've decided to run for United States Senate because I've decided I can help bring Utah's values and Utah's lessons to Washington," Romney, who is seeking to replace retiring Senator Orrin Hatch, said in a video posted to Twitter.

Romney's video made no mention of Trump but his relationship with the president looms as a major issue in the campaign. Much of the video focused on Utah values versus the Washington culture.

"Utah has a lot to teach the politicians in Washington," he said. "Utah welcomes legal immigrants from around the world. Washington sends immigrants a message of exclusion. And on Utah's Capitol Hill, people treat one another with respect."

On Immigration: Poverty level of aspiring immigrant's nation is irrelevant

Romney criticized Trump in January following reports that the president used a derogatory term to refer to African countries during a White House meeting on immigration.

"The poverty of an aspiring immigrant's nation of origin is as irrelevant as their race," Romney tweeted on Jan. 15. "The sentiment attributed to POTUS is inconsistent w/ America's history and antithetical to American values."
