On Free Trade: Supports USMCA trade agreement to replace NAFTA

The USMCA is a new trade pact among the United States, Mexico and Canada, intended as a stronger and modernized replacement for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT): "I am pleased that the Trump administration was able to strike a deal to modernize NAFTA with both Mexico and Canada. Maintaining a trilateral North American deal is an important prerequisite to preserving and extending those gains."

On Civil Rights: 1977: No gay teachers; 2018: No LGBT discrimination

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), quoted by the Salt Lake Tribune in 1977: "I wouldn't want to see homosexuals teaching school anymore than I'd want to see members of the American Nazi Party teaching school."

Hatch, quoted by the Washington Post, in a speech yesterday honoring Pride Month: "No one should ever feel less because of their gender identity or sexual orientation. LGBT youth deserve our unwavering love and support. They deserve our validation and the assurance that not only is there a place for them in this society, but that it is far better off because of them. These young people need us--and we desperately need them. We need their light to illuminate the richness and diversity of God's creations. We need the grace, beauty and brilliance they bring to the world."

On Tax Reform: You can't argue with math: tax cuts for vast majority

Jenny Wilson, the Democrat seeking to unseat Sen. Orrin Hatch, says the massive tax reform bill the Republican pushed through Congress this week is a gift for only the wealthiest.

Congress passed a $1.4 trillion overhaul of the U.S. tax code. Hatch played a major role in its drafting and shepherded the legislation through to passage. Conservatives claim the bill provides the largest tax cut in U.S. history and is good for the American middle class.

"You can't argue with math," Hatch said in a statement responding to Wilson's criticisms. "Studies from both left-leaning and right-leaning groups show that this historic legislation will lead to tax cuts for the vast majority of Utahns, with the largest cuts coming focused on the middle class. It is shocking that anyone would argue that working families in Utah should pay higher taxes."

Critics of the legislation, including Wilson, however, say only the top 1% of Americans and large corporations will get the most relief.
