Lawrence Zupan in 2018 VT Senate race

On Budget & Economy: Build an opportunity economy, with growth for generations

Join our campaign to build an Opportunity Economy for Vermont and America--an economy with equal opportunity for everyone and the growth needed to build a strong foundation for generations to come. Lawrence Zupan is a lifetime observer of what works and what doesn't work in the political and governmental realm, informed by his business and educational background as an MBA. He negotiated trade contracts with the Chinese before it was fashionable.

On Homeland Security: Government doesn't provide veterans with proper health care

Senator Sanders has proposed a $32 trillion government-controlled health care plan with no idea how to pay for more than half of it. And the half he thinks could be paid for would require raising five different taxes. This is the same government which can't even effectually and universally provide consistent health care to the most precious slice of our population, our veterans. How will this same government manage the health care of 328 million Americans?

On Families & Children: Cost of paid family leave burden falls on small businesses

On other subjects, including minimum wage and paid family leave, Zupan favors the free-market approach. "Politicians love to give away other people's money," he said, "which is what you are doing when you tell a business you have to pay $15 an hour or you have to give a certain amount of unpaid leave. Who's going to pay for all these things? "I'll tell you who's being asked to pay for them-it's the engine of economic prosperity, which is the small businesses of this country."

On Health Care: End mandate; start interstate competition

Zupan said his strategy for health care would be to open up interstate competition for all health insurance companies in the nation. Under the current system, Vermonters only get to choose between Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont and MVP Health Care. In addition, he wouldn't force Americans to purchase insurance, which he said is unconstitutional. "Anything that I have to be forced to buy could not be that good or I'd buy it on my own," Zupan said.

On Immigration: Stronger immigration controls; enforcement essential

When discussing border security, Zupan attempts to illustrate his view by equating border security with individuals locking their doors when they go home at night. He said enforcing the border is an essential activity of any sovereign nation, and that means strengthening, not eliminating, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "Eliminating ICE is a precursor to eliminating the borders," he said. "Without borders, this is not even a country."

On Education: High tuition costs pay for facilities; learn online instead

Regarding high college education costs, Zupan suggested that expensive facilities paid for by high tuition costs need to become a thing of the past. "The biggest issue with education is the emphasis on pushing our graduates into brick-and-mortar schools and jacking up $50K to $150K in debt, which is the way they start their post-graduate careers," he said. "Ironically, at a time when all of the wisdom, all of the knowledge accumulated through all of history is being made available online."

On Environment: New farming technologies improve water quality

On water quality issues, Lawrence Zupan said new farming technologies such as "precision injection fertilizer" which would allow phosphates to stay on the farmland and out of the lakes. "That means that the farmers can now focus the exact amount in the exact location at the exact time the fertilizer for the exact crop," he said.

Brook Paige offered a different take, claiming that farmers are being unfairly blamed for phosphorus in the Lake. "Unfortunately, the news media and the advocates have all pointed to the farmer, as if the farmers' biggest desire is to pour the valuable phosphates that are supposed to feed his crops into the river and allow his topsoil, his big investment, go the same way."
