2018 WA Senate race: on Gun Control

Susan Hutchison: Supports 2nd Amendment; existing laws need to be enforced

I stand by the 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms.ÿWhile Americans are united in their outrage and frustration with mass shootings, in many cases authorities have been warned of the threats but didn't bother to act.ÿ We must enforce our existing laws, keeping weapons from the dangerous and mentally ill and tackle the mental health crisis that leads to these unthinkable acts.ÿI WILL work to find true solutions without penalizing law-abiding gun owners. ?

Dave Strider: Background checks: no license for felons or other red flags

Q: Do you support or oppose the statement, "Absolute right to gun ownership"?

A: As a Veteran, I endorse gun safety and background checks; no one with a felony should be given carte-blanche in ownership. Also mental issues should be a RED FLAG as well

Mike Luke: All non-incarcerated people have right to bear arms

Another simple position, individuals not incarcerated have the right to be fully armed at all times while on US soil as per the 2nd amendment to the United States Constitution.

It is imperative that free citizens always out gun not just criminals but the government as well. If exercising our right to vote andÿto free speech does not stop encroachment on our liberties by either the government orÿcriminals then the right to bear arms is there to protect us.

Maria Cantwell: Close the background loophole and deal with mental health

Senator Cantwell discussed raising the age to purchase a rifle from 18-years-old to 21-years-old. And that more information and data should be communicated and people that have made threats, and what can be done stop and prevent tragedies. But, when pressed on the issue of banning the AR-15 and similar weapons, she said the federal government should take a page out of Washington States gun laws. "I think what we need to do is take the good success that Washington state has done on closing the background loophole and dealing with the mental health issue and get those implemented at the federal level."

While Cantwell believes that Washington State law on closing the background check loophole and dealing with the mental health issue should be implemented at the federal level, It was a different story when she was asked about a full ban on rifles like the AR-15 "so no interest in the ban of certain...?" "Thank you," said the senator.

Maria Cantwell: People on no-fly list shouldn't be able to own a gun

During a Q&A session, the senator told KHQ local news that she "believes anyone who is on the no-fly list shouldn't be able to own a gun." The Senator also told KHQ that the Senate and Congress need to act on banning bump stocks which allow a semi-automatic rifle fire off rounds like a fully automatic weapon. Earlier this week President Trump directed the Department of Justice to prohibit gun modifications just like the bump stock.
