ABC This Week interviews during 2019: on Immigration

Steve Bullock: No wall; no open borders; need immigration reform

Q: Would you have agreed in that debate when they said that undocumented immigrants should get healthcare?

BULLOCK: I would not have.

Q: How about when decriminalizing crossing the border?

BULLOCK: You got 100,000 people coming to the border now, you'd have multiples of that if that was the case. You know, I certainly believe in border security, I don't believe we have to build the wall, and I don't believe in open borders. It just underscores also we do need comprehensive immigrat

Amy Klobuchar: Against open borders & decriminalizing illegal entry

Q: Do you support the idea to decriminalize unauthorized border crossings?

KLOBUCHAR: I support different enforcement priorities. Of course, I'll look at the statute to see if you can make changes depending on the level of a security risk. But no, I don't support open borders and simply getting rid of this statute.

Amy Klobuchar: Administration to blame for chaos at the border

They claimed they were going to show us how great things were down there and all these things they had done, and then you saw people in cages. That's why we have been pushing for standards in place, by changing the asylum process and by stopping this chaotic policy, because what happens is the traffickers say to the people in those countries, hey, the president's changed the policy again, or a court changed it because the president did a policy that was illegal, and then they start com

Seth Moulton: Helped his Iraqi interpreter get asylum in U.S.

Q: While home in Massachusetts, Moulton helped his Iraqi interpreter, Mohammed Harba, with efforts seeking asylum in the U.S.

MOULTON: He was one of the many people in the world who came to America looking for asylum, a perfectly legal thing to do, which I think is something that's lost in this immigration debate today, and he did so because he is an American hero too. He put his life on the line not just for his country - Iraq, but for his new country, America.

Julian Castro: Can't take in everyone seeking asylum but can do more

We have a system to consider asylum claims based on certain criteria. Can we take everyone? Nobody has called for unlimited number of people coming to this country, but I do believe that we should expand that significantly, and we're big enough to do that. I refuse to believe, because it's not true, that the people that are coming because they're desperate, lot of them women and children, represent some sort of national security threat or cultural threat to this country. That's bull.

Julian Castro: No to "open borders"; increase number of refugees admitted

We can take in 110,000 refugees annually. Right now, we're only taking in between 30,000 and 40,000 refugees, I would like to see that go up to the statutory limit. Nobody has called for unlimited number of people coming to this country, but I do believe that we should expand that significantly. I refuse to believe, because it's not true, that the people that are coming because they're desperate, lot of them women and children, represent some sort of national security threat.
