ABC This Week interviews during 2019: on Jobs

Bill de Blasio: Working people's bill of rights

I put out a working people's bill of rights. We need to guarantee card check neutrality so it's easier to get into a union. We need to make sure that folks in the gig economy have benefits and wages that are protected. We need to make sure folks can't just be fired in this country without just cause, which is the truth right now. We need to do things like ensure a $15 minimum wage and paid vacation days. Every major country on Earth provides paid vacation days as a matter of law.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: We need to address inequality in pay & parental leave

This is part of an evolution that we've been having as a country. Women have historically been mistreated. We still have a pay gap which is persisted by inequalities in parental leave, the fact that women don't get guaranteed paid leave. I have three staffers that are having children in my first six months of my term and I see how these inequalities pay out. That's why I give all new fathers in my office guaranteed three months paid leave, because those inequalities are very real.

Tim Ryan: Rebuild the middle class: just getting by not enough

My campaign and my behavior as president is going to be to rebuild the middle class in the United States. People are tired of just getting by. They're tired of just surviving. They want to thrive. They want their kids to thrive. We've got to stop talking about the minimums, we got to figure out how we create an economy in health care, in energy, within manufacturing, where people can make $30, $40, $50 bucks an hour, that's the American dream. We've got to rebuild it.

Andrew Yang: Universal payments to all adults would have no stigma

We have to solve the problems that got Donald Trump elected in 2016, and to me the main driver of his victory was that we automated away four million manufacturing jobs. We're in the third inning of the greatest economic and technological transformation in the history of the country, and we need to evolve to the next form of our economy. This has been in place in Alaska for almost 40 years, where it's universal. And because it's universal, there's no stigma attached.

Julian Castro: Minimum wage should be a living wage

It is a shame today that we have not seen a minimum wage increase in almost a decade. It's different than it used to be, right? You used to be able to work 40 hours, even on minimum wage, and be able to provide for your family. Today that's not true. And we need to get back to a place in this 21st Century where that is true. The economy works for everybody.
