Amy Klobuchar in CBS "Face the Nation" interviews during 2019

On Free Trade: China: we need credibility, would remove some tariffs

When you deal with the rest of the world you want to have credibility. You keep your promises and you keep your threats. What he does is he makes these blustering threats like kicking all of our companies out of China that people don't think really he's going to follow through on. What I would do is go back to the negotiating table with our allies [and] examine these tariffs. Some of them can come off; some of them could stay on and then make sure that we're using trade enforcement.

On War & Peace: We need to start bringing troops home from Afghanistan

A lot of this is negotiating. I think you've got to make sure that when you're dealing with the Taliban that you know exactly what they're up to, what's going to happen. You want to make sure a lot of the gains we made with women in government and the democracy gains that we made in Afghanistan stay the same. But, yes, I think we need to start bringing our troops home.

On Free Trade: China trade problems are real; use allies, not broad tariffs

I would acknowledge the problem here. The surveillance, the intellectual property violations are basically stealing our blueprints, what they have done when it comes to subsidizing industries and manipulating their currency. I would do is to work with our allies and to push them. You have to keep at it methodically. I wouldn't have used the approach they've used. Yes, targeted tariffs, but they have used basically a meat cleaver.

On Free Trade: Can't just talk about trade war with China, get it done

I'm in a very heavy ag state. Iowa, my neighbor is a heavy ag state, North Dakota. I've talked to farmers in those areas and what they tell me is they're not going to get that soybean market back in one year because that market has gone to farmers in other countries [due to Trump's tariffs]. And so that's why there's an urgency to this when we have an $891 billion trade deficit--which is the worst that we've seen--you can't just keep talking about it. You actually have to get it done.

On Health Care: Provide immediate health care for undocumented immigrants

I think on the national basis, as we go forward, get immediate health care for people, yes. Yes for immediate health care needs, but as far as other benefits I think that has got to be a part of the discussion of comprehensive immigration reform.

On Immigration: Comprehensive immigration reform is an economic issue

The people who are here on temporary legal status, we've got hundreds of thousands of people that are legally here that are at risk or are being deported that work in our nursing homes and our hospitals. We have got DREAMers, two million of them, that came to this country through no fault of their own and are a major part of our economy. So, we need to have an economic discussion, as well as a border discussion and that's why I want to move forward with comprehensive immigration reform.

On War & Peace: Talking to enemies good if there's results; Trump has none

Q: Do you support President Trump's meetings with the leader of North Korea?

Klobuchar: You always have to talk to everyone when it is American security and the world's security at stake. But he keeps having these summits and meetings that really don't produce anything. what This is about is making sure that there are measurable results, that we have a plan when we go in there and we just haven't seen that.

Q: Would you accept North Korea as a nuclear power?

Klobuchar: No, I would not. What I am saying is you need to have steps and measures. Talk is good, but if all it is, is talk it doesn't produce anything for national security for America and international security for our allies.

On War & Peace: Would not accept North Korea as nuclear power

Q: Would you accept North Korea as a nuclear power?

KLOBUCHAR: No, I would not. What I am saying is you need to have steps and measures. You have dates and you have times and you have a focus and you have a plan. Talk is good, but if all it is, is talk it doesn't produce anything for national security for America and international security for our allies.

On Abortion: Against criminalizing abortion & imprisoning doctors

In Alabama and Georgia--states that basically have said doctors should go to prison--that women should not have a choice at all. I think that is just wrong and the vast majority of Americans are against that. 73% don't want to overturn Roe v. Wade. You do have pro-life Democrats in our party and that's fine. You see them not wanting to put that view on other people. We believe you shouldn't be putting doctors in prison for women exercising their right to choose what they want to do with their body.

On Abortion: Repeal Hyde Amendment; fund Planned Parenthood

It's not fair that women who don't have as much money, don't have the same choices as women who are wealthy. Those states that have given that right to those women have seen decreases in abortion. We have choice in our country, but we also make sure that we have reduced the number of abortions because we have contraception available because we funded Planned Parenthood.

On Abortion: New restrictive state laws are "just wrong"

What's going on in Alabama and Georgia, these states basically have said doctors should go to prison, that women should not have a choice at all. I think that is just wrong and the vast majority of Americans are going to be against that. I think you do have pro-life Democrats in our party. That's their personal view and that's fine. I think you also see them not wanting to put that view on other people.
