CBS "Face the Nation" interviews during 2019: on Foreign Policy

Ilhan Omar: Supports boycott/divest/sanction movement against Israel

Q: Do you stand by your call for a boycott of Israel?

OMAR: For many of us in Congress there has been a longstanding support for its two-state solution and this annexation now is going to make sure that that peace process does not happen. And we will not get to a two-state solution. You have to give people the opportunity to seek the kind of justice they want in a peaceful way. And I think the opportunity to boycott divest sanction is the kind of pressure that leads to that peaceful process.

Beto O`Rourke: Would talk to North Korea, but only if it gets results

I would continue diplomacy contingent on progress that keeps this country and our allies safe. Despite three years of almost bizarre foreign policy from this President, this country is no safer when it comes to North Korea. They have removed none of their nuclear weapons. We've added legitimacy to Kim Jong-un. I want to make sure that we pursue diplomatic, peaceful, nonviolent negotiations to resolve the challenges that we face on the Korean Peninsula and ensure that we denuclearize that area.

Beto O`Rourke: Diplomacy should yield results: none yet with North Korea!

I would continue diplomacy contingent on progress that keeps this country and our allies safe. Despite three years of almost bizarre foreign policy, this country is no safer when it comes to North Korea. They have removed none of their nuclear weapons or their potential to deliver them to the United States. In contravention of the United Nations they have launched other missiles flouting the diplomacy that this President has attempted so far. We've added legitimacy to Kim Jong-un.

Kamala Harris: We need to get back into Iran nuclear deal

I believe that we need to get back into the Iran nuclear deal. I would strengthen it. I would include ballistic missile testing. I think that we can strengthen what we do in terms of monitoring and verification. But there's no question that a lot of negotiation with a great deal of depth took place over a long period of time to reach that agreement, and it was an agreement that was being complied with by all parties.

Mike Pence: No nukes for Iran; support Iranians but not government

Iran has announced they're going to exceed the uranium enrichment limits within the Iran nuclear deal, one of the worst deals this country had ever entered into. The President's decision to refrain from a military strike when he learned it could cost 150 Iranian lives sends a message. It's time for Iran to recognize that America will never allow them to obtain a nuclear weapon. That would be a threat to our country, a threat to our cherished ally, Israel, and a threat to the world.

Mike Pence: We stand with the Iranian people against the Ayatollahs

Since the Green Revolution in 2009, the United States has made it clear that we are with the Iranian people. While we stand firmly against the Ayatollahs we have the highest hopes for the Iranian people. But it's time for Iran to recognize that the United States of America will never allow them to obtain a nuclear weapon. Those days must come to an end, and America is going to continue to stand, resolved, with the people of Iran for a better future for them.

Mike Pompeo: No nuclear weapons for Iran; they must be a "normal nation"

We don't want Iran to get a nuclear weapon. The previous administration put them on a pathway that virtually guaranteed that they could get there. So we withdrew from the ridiculous JCPOA and are moving ourselves towards a set of policies which will convince Iran to behave simply like a normal nation.

Pete Buttigieg: US foreign policy should be based on American values

Our own view needs to be based on the idea that American interests, American values, and American relationships all need to fit together. Under this administration, the U.S. does not have a foreign policy. Maybe an approach, but the approach is not pretty. It involves coddling dictators. It involves blaming fellow Americans for a lot of the problems we have around the world. It's no substitute for a policy in which the U.S. is leading.

Pete Buttigieg: We can lead the world or resent it; we can't do both

It's very clear that the U.S. is adrift. Under this administration, the U.S. does not have a foreign policy. Maybe an approach, but the approach is not pretty. It involves coddling dictators. It involves blaming fellow Americans for a lot of the problems we have. It's no substitute for a policy in which the U.S. is leading. We can either lead the rest of the world or we can resent the rest of the world. We can't do both.
