CBS "Face the Nation" interviews during 2019: on Principles & Values

Dick Durbin: President is on trial for impeachment, but so is Senate

I can tell you that it isn't just the President who's on trial in an impeachment proceeding. The Senate is on trial. And we have a constitutional responsibility. You know what it boils down to is we may interfere with some tee times here, but we ought to really stand up for the demeanor, the history, and the traditions of the Senate in terms of doing this in the proper way.

Lindsey Graham: Impeachment: Don't need to hear a lot of witnesses

I am clearly made up my mind. I'm not trying to hide the fact that I have disdain for the accusations in the process. So I don't need any witnesses. The President can make a request to call witnesses. They can make a request or call Mike Pence and Pompeo and Joe Biden and Hunter Biden. I am ready to vote on the underlying articles. I don't really need to hear a lot of witnesses.

Kelly Armstrong: After Ukraine call transcript, everything else is just noise

Q: Did Trump's Ukraine phone call include a quid pro quo?

ARMSTRONG: President Trump got elected because he doesn't do the things the way everybody else does. President Trump said the phone call was perfect. President Zelensky has said on numerous occasions that he didn't--

Q: And you accept all of this?

ARMSTRONG: --feel the pressure. I do. I think you have the transcript and you have the two principals on the phone call that have stated that. After that, everything else is really just noise.

Mike Bloomberg: Words matter; what President says is very important

I think words matter. People look to their leadership for guidance and to say that it doesn't have an effect is wrong. What the President says is very important. If he supports or says nice things about racists, it encourages racism. If he goes and says nice things about white supremacists, he encourages that kind of violence. I hope he understands this. He cannot go and shoot off his mouth and say anything, he's the President of the United States.

Bernie Sanders: Economic rights are human rights: that's FDR's "socialism"

Q: Some voters are uncomfortable with the term "socialism."

A: I have got to do more work in explaining what that means. FDR said economic rights are human rights: the right to a job that pays you a living wage, the right to health care, the right to education. And we have expanded that to say that means a clean environment. What Democratic socialism means to me is guaranteeing all of our people in the wealthiest country in the history of the world a decent retirement, a decent standard of living.

Kamala Harris: Words matter; leaders cannot be ignorant of history of race

Q: Biden said segregationist senators called him "son;" they would've called a black man "boy." Is that offensive to you?

Harris: We cannot be ignorant of the history of race in this country. That is a very loaded term, loaded with a history that includes extreme racism, violence, discrimination, prejudice, you name it. I think it is very important that we who are leaders choose our words carefully understanding the significance and the power of our word.

Pete Buttigieg: Not up to the president to decide who should be prosecuted

It's not up to the President to pursue charges [based on the Mueller Report]. I believe that the last place you look for guidance on how to conduct a prosecution is to the Oval Office. There should be a Department of Justice that can think for itself. There is tons of evidence that would point to an obstruction investigation. I'm just saying it shouldn't be ordered up by the President.
