CNN "State of the Union" interviews during 2019: on Jobs

Bernie Sanders: Help transition for miners: income for 5 years, & education

Q: How would you help workers of the fossil fuel industry transition to other respectable fields of work in a future green economy?

SANDERS: The coal miners in this country, the men and women who work on the oil rigs, they are not my enemy. My enemy is climate change. We have built into our $16 trillion plan, tens of billions of dollars for a just transition. If some worker loses their job because we're moving away from fossil fuel, we're going to guarantee them an income for five years, the education they need, because those workers are not our enemies. They should not be punished because we're trying to save the planet.

Joe Biden: Working on climate change can create 10 million jobs

This is an enormous opportunity. We can create over 10 million jobs that are making $25 bucks an hour. If we are able to move in a direction that we have 500,000 charging stations for electric vehicles, what does that do? Well, that gives us a corner on the electric vehicle market. That will create thousands of good jobs in the automobile industry. We will own the market.

Pete Buttigieg: Lots of job opportunity in green economy; not all high tech

Q: What would you do to ensure a just transition for displaced workers in the new renewable energy economy?

BUTTIGIEG: A lot of the jobs that are being created in the green economy are also good paying union jobs. A lot of them are good old-fashioned building trades jobs to do the retrofits to get the energy efficiency that we need. We can create tremendous economic opportunity but let's be honest about the fact that this also means transition for a lot of people. My climate plan inclu will support everything from retirement to healthcare to transition assistance.

Q.: How would you use the Green New Deal to bring Americans together and address racial, gender, and socioeconomic disparities?

BUTTIGIEG: This is not only a question of generational justice. It is a question of social, racial, and gender justice. I'm proposing that we fund communities, developing community solutions including issues that are exacerbated or caused by environmental problems.

Cory Booker: Supports $15 minimum wage; pays campaign staff at least that

Q: You support a $15-an-hour minimum wage. Do you pay your campaign staff that?

BOOKER: You know, we have said in our campaign that we're not only going to pay our campaign staff that, but we're going to pay interns as well. Not only do we pay our campaign staff wages that reflect what my values are, but we actually make sure that we have inclusive campaigns, diverse campaigns.

Q: So it's $15 an hour minimum?

BOOKER: It's $15 an hour or more than that, yes.

Bill de Blasio: Put working people first, not wealthy corporations

I talk about putting working people first. Federal government has been on the side of the wealthy and the corporations for a long time. We saw that with that huge tax giveaway just a few years ago. In New York, we have put working people first. We have put money back in the hands of working people with things like paid sick leave, full-day, high- quality pre-K for all our kids, guaranteed health care for folks who don't have insurance.
