CNN "State of the Union" interviews during 2019: on Principles & Values

Justin Amash: People put up with Congress because economy is good

People want open, honest representation. They want people to come to Congress and work with integrity. And what the president is doing is actually lowering the tone across the country. He's harming civil discourse. He's creating a lot of partisan divide. I think that's very dangerous for our country. And I don't think a lot of people appreciate it. I think a lot of people put up with it because the economy is good right now. But I don't think they'd put up with it if things went south.

Beto O`Rourke: Impeach Trump to get facts & assure accountability

If no accountability [by not impeaching], then we will have set the precedent that it is OK to accept help from a foreign government, it is OK to obstruct the investigation into the interference in our election, and that this and any future president can continue this kind of behavior. So, impeachment is incredibly important to get to the facts, to discover the truth, to make sure that there's accountability. It's the only way that we're going to be able to maintain our system of government.

Bernie Sanders: Democratic socialism opposes concentration of wealth & power

I have spent my whole life fighting against authoritarianism. What I believe, when we talk about Democratic socialism, is we have to deal with the massive levels of income and wealth inequality in this country. Is it acceptable that three families in America now own more wealth than the bottom half of the American people? Is it acceptable that the top 1% owns more wealth than the bottom 92%, or that 49% of all new income goes to the top 1%?

Cory Booker: Trump undermines constitutional intent: no one above the law

Q: After special counsel Robert Mueller spoke this week, you tweeted that Congress should begin impeachment proceedings immediately against President Trump. What made you change your thinking?

BOOKER: It was seeing a president who wants to undermine constitutional intent. He has not been complying with subpoenas. He has not been complying with legitimate congressional inquiries to continue the investigation that Mueller very specifically said it's on Congress now to continue. This president is not above the law. He should not be able to stop the checks and balances on the executive. And I feel like we have a moral obligation now to investigate this president.

Cory Booker: Supports impeachment investigation necessary to get to truth

Q: What about impeachment?

BOOKER: It was a few weeks of seeing a president who wants to undermine constitutional intent and say that he's above the law. He has not been complying with subpoenas. He has not been complying with legitimate congressional inquiries to continue the investigation that Mueller very specifically said it's on Congress to continue after he clearly indicated that there is potential corruption and obstruction of justice. This president is not above the law. He should not be able to stop the checks and balances on the executive. I feel like we have a moral obligation now to investigate this president. Impeachment proceedings will give us more legal leverage to get the information Congress needs to get to the bottom of what his administration has done while they're in office.

Donald Trump: Mueller Report documents 77 lies by Trump campaign

The Mueller report documents at least 77 specific instances where President Donald Trump's campaign staff, administration officials and family members, Republican backers and his associates lied or made false assertions (sometimes unintentionally) to the public, Congress, or authorities, according to a new CNN analysis. The plurality of lies came from Trump himself, and most of them took place while he was president.Lies told to whom:CNN's approach to analyzing the report was this: Every time Mueller documented a false assertion made to the public or federal officials -- even if it was the same falsehood told again and again -- it was counted.

John Delaney: Independently wealthy but grew up in a blue collar family

Delaney, who is independently wealthy after starting two separate companies, opened up when he discussed his own roots in a working class neighborhood in New Jersey, something he has not done much on the campaign trail, a decision he admitted to CNN earlier this year was a mistake.

"I grew up in a time when we had institutions in our society that really supported people. And I don't think we see that here today," he said. "I mean, I grew up in a blue collar family. My dad was an electrician. Neither of my parents went to college. I needed scholarships from my dad's union to give me the opportunity to get the education that I have received. And I had this amazing kind of American dream-type life where I worked hard and played by the rules."

Pete Buttigieg: Yes, young, but more government experience than Pres. Trump

Buttigieg rebutted questions about his age by saying he has the experience to be president. Buttigieg appeared at the town hall without a jacket, the decision that made him look even younger than he does, a fact he often jokes about on the campaign trail.

When asked why he thinks, at 37 years old, he is qualified to be President, Buttigieg replied he had the experience, another answer that hit the Trump administration. "I have more years of government experience under my belt than the President. That's a low bar. I know that. I also have had more years of executive government experience than the vice president," he said.

"I get I'm the young guy in the conversation, but experience is what qualifies me to have a seat at this table," he concluded.

John Kasich: OpEd: moderate Republican who has been critical or Trump

Could President Donald Trump be in for a Republican primary challenge? Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, in Austin for South by Southwest (SXSW), addressed the rumor in an interview at the festival. "I don't know what I'm going to do," said Kasich. "At some point there's an internal clock for all of us and there are deadlines, but they're not here yet. I'll tell you this though, I'm not in a Hail Mary. I run when I think I can win. So we assess things just about every week, sometimes every day, and we'll see. I'm not closing anything down, I just don't know."

The Republican former governor is known as a moderate and has been critical of President Trump in the past. It has been speculated that he might make a run for the White House. "I don't get into things where I don't thing I can win, and right now, right now, today, inside the Republican Party, I can't beat him in a primary," Kasich told SXSW. "But we'll see. That's today."

Kasich ended his eight-year governorship in January.

Elizabeth Warren: I'm not a Democratic Socialist; we can gain from markets

Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren said that she is not a Democratic Socialist, drawing a line between herself and Bernie Sanders, whose views draw frequent comparisons between the two. Sanders, an independent from Vermont, identifies as a Democratic Socialist, and Warren was asked to differentiate.

"Bernie has to speak to what Democratic Socialism is," replied Warren. The interview asked, "And you are not one?"

"I am not. And the centrists have to speak to whatever they are doing. What I can speak is to is how I am doing," Warren said.

She continued: "All I can tell you is what I believe. And that is there is an enormous amount to be gained from markets. That markets create opportunities. Markets have to have rules. They have to have a cop on the beat," she said, adding that "markets without rules are theft."
