Seth Moulton in CNN "State of the Union" interviews during 2019

On Health Care: Provide troops and vets both physical and mental health care

It's just like when you get a physical, and the doctor says, "you should go to the gym, you should go on runs, you should eat healthy." That's exactly what I believe about mental health care. That's why I'm introducing these policy goals to talk about making sure that every soldier, sailor, airman, and Marine gets regular mental health care checkups, just like they get physicals, that it becomes routine, both for active duty and for veterans at the VA.

On Health Care: Treat mental health like physical care with regular checkups

It's just like when you get a physical, and the doctor says you should go to the gym, you should go on runs, you should eat healthy. That's exactly what I believe about mental health care. That's why I'm introducing these policy goals to talk about making sure that every soldier, sailor, airman, and Marine gets regular mental health care checkups, just like they get physicals, that it becomes routine, both for active duty and for veterans at the VA. I hope that that will be a model for the rest of the country. I will make sure that every high schooler in America gets a checkup with a mental health care professional and learn how to proactively take care of themselves mentally.

On Health Care: Expand mental care at VA, rest of country

I'm introducing these policy goals to talk about making sure that every soldier, sailor, airman, and Marine gets regular mental health care checkups, that it becomes routine, both for active duty and for veterans at the VA. I hope that that will be a model for the rest of the country. That's why I will make sure that every high schooler in America gets to get a checkup with a mental health care professional, and not only that, but learn how to proactively take care of themselves mentally.

On Homeland Security: Needed courage to talk about post-traumatic stress

Q: Are you worried that coming forward as a presidential candidate, saying you have post-traumatic stress, could be used against you? Moulton: Absolutely. And, candidly, that's why I haven't talked about it before. I'm someone who talks a lot about the importance of courage, the value of courage in our politics, how so much could be better in Washington if politicians on both sides of the aisle just had the courage to do the right thing. I admit this is a place where I did not have the courage to share my own story, because I was afraid of the political consequences.

On War & Peace: Against pushing us into war with Iran

The parallels between how the Bush administration pushed us into war with Iraq and how the Trump administration is pushing us into war with Iran are uncanny. But I also think there's a parallel here with Vietnam, where what Bolton and Pompeo are trying to do is put enough troops in the Gulf, that there's just a good chance there will be a Gulf of Tonkin-type incident. It's been very clear from things that the secretary of state in particular has said that that's what he hopes happens.

On War & Peace: A mistake for those who voted for Iraq war

Q: Was it a mistake to vote to go to war in Iraq?

A: It was a mistake, because we should have been a lot more careful about going into Iraq. We should have questioned the intelligence. We should have made sure that we exhausted every opportunity before we put young American lives in danger.

On War & Peace: Trump's "Chicken hawks" pushing us towards war in Iran

The parallels between how the Bush administration pushed us into war with Iraq and how the Trump administration, under a draft-dodging commander in chief, is pushing us into war with Iran are uncanny. But I also think there's a parallel here with Vietnam, where Bolton and Pompeo are trying to put enough troops in the Gulf that will set off war with Iran. We have a commander in chief who's not tough enough, who doesn't have the credibility to stand up to these chicken hawks.

On Homeland Security: Veterans deserve the best health care in the world, period

Q: What about privatizing?

A: If we can't do it through the VA, then that should be an option. That should be an option. I believe what President Obama advocated for. What he wanted was to have a public option that competes with private options as well. What some people in our party want to do is force everybody onto a health care plan designed in 1963. I think we can do better than that.

On Homeland Security: Focus on cybersecurity to deal with real threats to US

National security is not just about preventing Russia from invading us with tanks into Western Europe. Russia is trying to hack our elections. China is attacking us through the Internet every single day and stealing our business ideas and our military -- that's where a lot of American jobs are going. Rather than build this fifth century ridiculous border wall on the southern border, let's talk about a cyber wall that will stop Russia and China from interfering in our business.
