CNN "State of the Union" interviews during 2019: on Tax Reform

Steve Bullock: Many people not benefitting from economy

Q: What do you say to voters who say, economy's doing great, why vote for somebody else?

A: If you look over the last 40 years, the average American worker hasn't had a wage increase in real terms. Only half the 30-year-olds are doing better than their parents were at age 30. The guy that cleans this building paid more in taxes last year than Amazon did with $10 billion in profit. For a whole lot of folks, they're not getting a lot better because of what the Trump tax cuts.

Kamala Harris: Tax credits for middle class & working families

There is no question that, over many decades, the rules have been written in a way that have been to the exclusion of lifting up the middle class and working families in America. That's why I'm proposing that one of the things that we do to address that is that we reform the tax code in a way that we'll give middle-class working families that are making less than $100,000 a year a $6,000 tax credit that they can receive it up to $500 a month.

Julian Castro: Raise the top marginal tax rate; negotiate the numbers

Q: What about the GOP tax cuts?

A: I absolutely would look at undoing the tax cuts that benefited the super wealthy and benefited corporations.

Q: Would you raise the top marginal tax rate?

A: I support raising it. We would have to negotiate on where that goes. They did a poll: 45% of Republicans said that they believe the idea of that kind of top marginal tax rate was a good idea. So, I believe that we should increase it. Now, where it goes to, I think that would be a subject of negotiation.
