2019 MS Governor's race: on Immigration

Robert Foster: Liberal governors ignore federal immigration law

Foster told Mississippi Today, "If liberal governors and mayors can ignore federal law on illegal immigration, then it's past time for conservatives to push back and enforce our states' abortion laws, no matter what the liberal activist judges say."

Bill Waller: National Guard is reasonable for border security

As for the current national debate over President Trump's emergency declaration to build a wall at the nation's southern border, Waller said he had "no idea" whether the president's move violated the Constitution.

But he did agree "we have a border security issue that is more than just illegal aliens," he said, referring to illegal drugs and sex trafficking and the fact the courts are "filled with cases involving crystal meth, much of which comes from Mexico."

When asked whether he would send National Guard members from Mississippi for a year of duty supplementing border patrols, Waller said he likely would, regardless of who was in the White House.

"That is one of the missions of the National Guard. If there was a reasonable basis for the President's request, I probably would send them," he acknowledged.

Robert Foster: No sanctuary: report illegal criminals

Strong on Immigration: Robert will stand with our President, opposing illegal immigration. He will make certain that we work with Federal law enforcement on reporting illegal criminals and that there will be no sanctuary for illegal criminals anywhere in our state.

Jim Hood: Stay out of DACA fights; it's a federal issue

Mississippi's top law enforcement officer is staying out of a legal battle over a recent controversial announcement from President Donald Trump. Fifteen Democratic attorneys general filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Sept. 6 over the announcement that he would eliminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program unless Congress intervenes.

The state AGs say the decision violates the due process rights of people participating in the program, which allows immigrants whose parents brought them to the US without authorization to remain in the country.

Attorney General Jim Hood said, "Immigration's really a federal issue and normally I don't get involved unless it affects a Mississippi law," Hood told reporters.

In 2012, Hood also declined to participate in lawsuit brought by immigration agents against the Obama Administration for ending the practice of deporting undocumented young people. Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant later joined that lawsuit on his own.

Tate Reeves: Supports law enforcement inquiry into immigration status

In addition, Reeves said that he would support legislation to prohibit cities from passing local ordinances that prevent law enforcement officers from inquiring about the immigration status of individuals they encounter. "I believe no local governments or state entities have the ability to break our laws creating jurisdictions of amnesty for illegal aliens," Reeves said. "No governmental entity, whether it's city hall or on university campuses, is above following federal immigration law."
