On Education:
An infrastructure plan that includes schools
What's happening right now with the African American community when we still have public schools that are crumbling, heat's not working in some of our schools in Baltimore. That's why I came out with an infrastructure plan that includes our schools.
That's why I think we need to support our public schools with higher teacher pay. And that we need to put a bigger percentage of our federal budget into that and less giving away to the wealthy people.

On Civil Rights:
Government must address integrity of elections
We're going to see Attorney General Barr this next week, in front of the Judiciary Committee, on which I serve. And I'm going to be asking him what is he doing about Russia? Because to me, that's the key thing. We have an election coming up in 2020.
It doesn't matter if you're a Democrat or a Republican. You want to have a fair election.

On Principles & Values:
Hold president accountable with investigations & election
The most-important thing is to hold this president accountable. There are many ways to do that. One is with the process through Congress, which includes these investigations, which the president is already stonewalling.
The second is other investigations that are going on right now, including in the state of New York. And the third is pretty straightforward. That is defeating him in 2020. And that's what I intend to do and will do.

On Social Security:
Proposed new retirement accounts for those without
The Republican tax bill did so much to help the wealthy build up a trillion dollars in debt. All you have to do is make some changes to that that won't hurt everyday Americans and you have the money to literally ensure that
49 million Americans, who have no retirement right now except for Social Security, can start saving. We call it UP savings accounts.
And it is a great idea. 50 cents for every hour someone works in an account that they can take with them, no matter where they work, if they don't have a 401(k), where they can take out the first
$2,500 for emergency expenses, when we've got four out of ten Americans that don't even have $400 for an emergency room bill.

On Civil Rights:
Reparations can mean investing in communities
I believe we have to invest in those communities that have been so hurt by racism. It doesn't have to be a direct pay for each person. But what we can do is, invest in those communities, acknowledge what's happened. And that means better education.
That means looking at, for our whole economy: community college, one-year degrees, minimum wage, childcare, making sure that we have that shared dream of opportunity for all Americans.

On Foreign Policy:
Military an option in Venezuela, but focus on diplomacy
Right now, it's our problem, in that we need to push for humanitarian aid. We need to make sure that, I'm glad we have recognized who should be president here, Guaido. And I'm also glad that we're trying to push Maduro out.
But the answer here is to make sure that we are working with our allies, pushing for democracy and some kind of a negotiated agreement. Military should always be on the table, but I don't see that we use it now.

On Health Care:
We can bring drug prices down; Trump can't
Q: Is there anything Trump's done as president that wasn't bad?A: There are a number of things that he's said he wants to do, like bring down prescription drug prices, that I agree with.
My problem is, he doesn't have the will to actually get it done. Insulin, simple drug prices tripling, quadrupling, doesn't make any sense. We can bring those drug prices down.
