2019 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Corporations

J.B. Pritzker: State can foster & encourage business in poorer areas

I want downstate Republicans and Democrats to work together with me on a Downstate Revitalization Plan to encourage the creation of new businesses and jobs and foster the growth of existing ones in struggling communities so they can thrive.

Tom Wolf: State/private collaboration on economy

I present a comprehensive plan to help grow our economy by continuing to invest in our workforce. This plan calls on contributions from the business community, labor unions, educators, research institutions, students, parents, and adult workers.

And it increases opportunity for every Pennsylvanian at every stage of life--from birth to retirement. I'm proposing a package of policies and investments called the Statewide Workforce, Education, and Accountability Program.

Steve Bullock: Cut red tape and cut business equipment tax

Business is booming, and it's no surprise. Since 2013 we've repealed or revised hundreds of regulations and removed red tape. We cut the business equipment tax for every Montana business, and eliminated it for two-thirds of the businesses operating in the state.

Tony Evers: Cap corporate credit to pay for tax relief

We're going to cut taxes by ten percent for everyone making up to $100,000 and families making up to $150,000. But we're not going to do it by spending money we don't have or that might not be there in two years. I don't make promises I can't keep, and I'm not going to propose things that we can't pay for. So instead, we're going to fund tax relief for hard-working families by capping a corporate tax credit, 80% of which goes to filers making more than $1 million a year.

Phil Murphy: Incentive programs for business need reform

Tax incentive programs should be about the best of what we do in government--creating good jobs by investing taxpayer dollars with integrity, and subject to real oversight. That's the test. And, it's the test our system spectacularly failed. I do not oppose tax incentives. Carefully crafted, properly enforced, and transparent tax incentives have a place in a successful economic program. Incentives do help. But we need to do this the right way, the smart way, and the honest way.

Jared Polis: Remove deductions exploited by corporations at our expense

Our tax code gives too much power to the special interests who can afford expensive lobbyists, while forcing ordinary families to pay more. As legislators, I know that many of you find these tax giveaways offensive. Unlike budget expenditures, which you vote on every year, these tax expenditures are on autopilot, some since the 1930s. We need a tax code that reflects today's realities rather than yesterday's distortions. Let people keep more of their hard-earned money rather than give it away to special interests.

The Legislature and the Auditor have gotten off to a good start by closely examining which deductions are benefiting our economy, and which are being exploited by corporations at Coloradans' expense. I want to work with you to close these loopholes and pass the savings on to families by lowering the income tax rate.
