2019 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Gun Control

J.B. Pritzker: Enforce & enact commonsense gun laws

We will pay for the gun dealer licensing law that I was proud to sign during my first week in office, to take a reasonable step to end the scourge of gun violence in too many of our neighborhoods. We will take a more rigorous approach to getting guns out of the hands of those who shouldn't have them in the first place. I'm committed to advocating for commonsense gun laws, and I'm committed to making sure that we are implementing the laws we already have on the books more effectively.

Phil Bryant: Protect schools from violence with active shooter drills

Unfortunately, a problem exists in our schools today that threatens children of all ages. It has become commonly known as the active shooter. To help protect our students and those who teach them, I will ask you to pass a comprehensive plan to keep our school children safe. The recommendations come from a year-long study for effective results. If you will pass and fund the Mississippi Safe School Act, our parents, teachers and administrators will be allowed to care for our children in a safe and protected environment.

Analysis by Mississippi Today, Jan. 31:House Bill 1283 requires active shooter drills in addition to fire drills and emergency drills which already occur. This legislation follows last year's bill, also called the Mississippi School Safety Act, that would have allowed teachers to carry guns in the classroom after specialized training--it died in the House.

Steve Sisolak: Common-sense gun laws save lives

I am working with the Legislature to implement commonsense background checks on all firearm sales in Nevada. We will outlaw bump stocks. And we will address the threat gun violence poses to victims of domestic violence in this state. Those subjected to restraining orders should not be allowed to buy a firearm. Background checks save lives.

Jay Inslee: Acted for common-sense gun-safety where Congress won't

While too many in D.C. remain in the grips of the NRA, we're the state that stands up for common-sense gun-safety reforms. We've closed background check loopholes, banned bump stocks and approved protective orders that keep guns away from people in crisis.

Michelle Lujan-Grisham: Prioritize common-sense reforms

Our Department of Health will conduct a thorough study of gun violence, but right now we will also take action where we know we must. I expect to sign a bill that will ban those convicted of assault from purchasing or possessing a gun, I expect strengthened background checks, and I expect tighter restrictions on safekeeping to ensure children do not have access to guns in the home. With common-sense reforms, we can build a state where people who should not have firearms, don't, simple as that.

Doug Ducey: Safe Arizona Schools Plan: more cops; more background checks

Last spring, we researched the five deadliest school shootings of the last 20 years, and asked: How could these have been prevented? We built a plan that could make a real difference: The Safe Arizona Schools Plan. More cops on campus. More school counselors. Improved background checks. A STOP order that protects Second Amendment rights while keeping guns out of the hands of individuals who are a lethal threat.

We know when a police officer is around, it makes things safer. Who do we call whenever there's trouble? Our brave men and women in blue. And that's why we're including enough dollars to put a cop on every campus that needs one.

This plan is a reasoned and balanced approach. We modeled elements of it from Gabby Giffords' plan. This is simply too important an issue to let partisan politics and special interests get in the way. We've got a responsibility to do something for our kids--and we've got to do it this session.

Mark Gordon: Disarm students immediately when they bring guns to school

I believe we can take steps towards making our schools safer. There's a bill and a budget proposal that I believe can make a difference for the safety of our kids.

Last fall, a young person stepped forward to tell Principal Terry Quinn about a fellow student who planned an attack in his school. After hearing this information Principal Quinn immediately acted to locate and disarm the student, who was carrying a pistol and had another gun in his locker. When confronted, the student revealed that he had wanted to shoot as many students as he could. It is a sad thing that these sorts of incidents can happen.

But, Principal Quinn and the staff at Sage Valley Junior High have created a school culture that fosters confidence in students to do the right thing and come forward when necessary.

Principal Quinn is here with us today and I would like to acknowledge the courage of that young person and the quick and decisive action which averted a potentially devastating tragedy.

Ralph Northam: More deaths due to guns than car accidents: so let's act

In 2017, 1,028 Virginians died of gun-related causes.

In comparison, that's more deaths due to gun violence than the 956 Virginians who died due to vehicle accidents in 2017.

We have recognized that we have a problem with road safety and vehicle deaths--and we have acted together to prevent future ones [such as] the Executive Leadership Team on Highway Safety, and efforts to strengthen our Move Over law, aimed at protecting our first responders.

If we are able to agree that we need to act when we have a problem with highway safety and preventable deaths, then surely we can agree to work together to keep more Virginians alive by improving gun safety. This has to be a dialogue--that's a two-way exchange of ideas.

This year I'm proposing we act to approve an "extreme risk law." It creates a legal way for law enforcement and the courts to temporarily remove firearms from someone who has shown dangerous behavior, and who poses a risk to themselves or others.
