CNN LGBT Town Hall: on Government Reform

Amy Klobuchar: Pass Equality Act by marshalling public support

Q: What would be your strategy for getting support from Congress from members who are not pro-LGBT?

KLOBUCHAR: It is time to pass the Equality Act. Our problem is you can get married in one state and then you can get fired from your job for being gay. That's why the Equality Act is so important. It's passed the House. It is sitting in the graveyard of legislation that is Mitch McConnell's desk. What I would do to get it passed is to bring people together to make the case for it.

Cory Booker: Paid family leave and child tax credit expansion for all

Afghanistan and the Congo have paid family leave. America should have paid family leave. And to see the challenges that parents are having struggling to hold down a job, struggling to find affordable child care, and this is why my support for everything from paid family leave to expanding the child tax credit are really urgent and those plans are going to apply equally to everyone.

Elizabeth Warren: Pass Equality Act in Senate with more Dems or end filibuster

Q: What will you do to ensure that the Senate passes the Equality Act?

WARREN: We can get it through the House because we got a majority in the House. What it's going to take in the Senate, we got to have more Democrats in the Senate. If you want to get something done in the United States Senate that is important and that you've got a vocal minority that's opposed to it, it's time to roll back the filibuster.

Tom Steyer: 12-year Congressional term limits for generational shift

Q: Should the Equality Act apply to sexual orientation but not gender identity, as some in Congress are seeking?

STEYER: What I have done for the last 10 years is to try and organize Americans at the grassroots to push for justice throughout the society. So in this case, I understand that there may be people in the Congress who will push for the wrong thing, and it seems to me the only real way to push back against them is to go to the grassroots and get the people, their constituents, to push. I've also talked about putting in term limits for congresspeople and senators. One of the things that's true in the United States about attitudes towards the LGBTQ community is that there's been a generational shift. And if we, in fact, push through what I've talked about, that people in D.C. find very awkward and unnerving, 12-year term limits for congresspeople and senators, we'd get a wave of new blood into the Congress of the United States.
